In response to many questions about copy problems, there appears
to be a major system problem at the moment. I, too, am unable to
connect to NRSTA2, but I can copy the book from a different cluster.
It does appear that many others have been able to get the book, too.
I will monitor the problem for you and try to find a solution. I
will also find several homes for this guide and post them in this note.
    Here is the first:

    MRED::SWDOC5:[FILE_TRANSFER]DCINPROF.PS
    LEZAH:: "         "            "

This location is set up with world read priveleges.

In response to the question about permission to repost, yes, you have
my permission to forward or repost this information in other notes files.

Please consider one simple fact. Information on the internet changes
constantly. As a result, pointers and some examples in the guide may
change, too. Cheryl and I got used to this fact while writing the
    book.

Thank you for all your positive comments.

We do hope this guide helps you perform your job better, which will
untimately make Digital a stronger company.

Since its release on Firday, I made several small changes in the Mail chapter.

I want to thank Wayne Vigeant, of the Enterprise Services Center,
Palo Alto Gateway Operations, for the following feedback.

Errata:

1)Page 2-3 Under the "VAXmail" header near the bottom shows the
ALL-IN-1 address used to send you mail as "[email protected]"
That is wrong. It should be "[email protected]" -use the site
code and not the node name.

2) Table 2-1 on page 2-4 is wrong. You must have pulled that from an
old version of "gateway.doc". I am concerned over this because DECWRL
is NOT a mail gateway any longer. I have worked extremely hard over the
last year to convince people not to use it and I would appreciate it if
you pulled it out of the table ASAP. You also mention DECWRL on page 2-5
as an alternative to VBORMC for European users. This is also incorrect.

"Don't use DECWRL." Okay, I have read that message before. What I am
missing is the table of RMC's that I should use. Why did you delete
the one from GATEWAY.DOC that was of the form:

3547.16.PS is a Postscript printer filePEKING::RICKETTSKDrop the dead donkeyWed Dec 07 1994 03:2915
You print it on a postscript printer, eg LPS20. Don't try to print it
on a non-postscript printer, you'll just get a load of garbage (the
same as you see on screen if you try to 'edit' the file), and it
uses a lot of paper. The assumption that _everyone_ has access to a
postscript printer is one of the problems with a number of DEC internal
systems; it is not valid. Ask your systems manager which printer you
should queue the job to; for me, the VMS command was 'PRINT/QUEUE=PS_SRCP1
DCINPROF.PS', the printer being PS_SRCP1. You need to know what your .PS
printer is called, assuming that you have one.
It is possible to read .PS documents from VMS somehow, but I can't
    remember offhand how.

Ken (who did direct it to the wrong printer at first, and managed to stop
the job after about 60 pages! 8*))

You need "Display PostScript" in order to view the file on a
    Windows Terminal.

I don't know if this is available under your operating system
(OpenVMS, UNIX etc.), but I do know that it is not available with a
VXT 2000 or currently with a Multia MultiClient Desktop.

However, this functionality (Display Postscript) WILL be available
on the Multia in the next revision of the Multia Base software (V3.0)
due out in the February/March timeframe - along with a LOT more new
    functionality.

Alternatively, DECprint Utility (UPI = VZP) will enable you to
print PostScript files on a Sixel Printer (LA70/75/75+/210/310/324/424
    to name but a few).

3547.18Viewing and printing PostScript filesFUNYET::ANDERSONAt Intel, Quality is Job .999Wed Dec 07 1994 11:0712
From OpenVMS, you can view PostScript files with the CDA Viewer, invoked with
the VIEW command. Specifically, a command like

	VIEW /INTERFACE=DECWINDOWS file.ps /FORMAT=PS

will work. DECwindows Mail also displays PostScript mail.

And if your system has DECprint Supervisor installed, you don't have to worry if
the file you are about to print is PostScript or text, as it will sense the data
type and do the right thing.

If you're running DECwindows, I don't know why it wouldn't work unless
DECwindows was not completely installed or something, However, there
are other X servers that do not have the display PostScript extensions
(many X terminals and MS Windows X servers, for example). If you have
such a server, you can instead use Ghostscript and Ghostview from the
Free Software Foundation (the Gnu people). It's available on many
platforms, including various UNIXes, VMS, and Windows. It runs on the X
client side (the one that's not the display host).

Hi,

First let me say that I am encouraged by all the positive feedback.

I would like to respond to those of you who have requested the guide
in so many different formats. Before I could respond to your requests,
I would need additional funding for reformatting, conversion, and many
other tasks that are required to produce this type of guide.

Don't dispair, however, I am collecting your feedback and plan to compile
a report that details all requests. The report will be presented to the
funder for further analysis, which will ultimately decide the book's fate.

For the moment, the best place from which to copy the guide appears to be:

              GEMVAX::CUP$FILE_TRANSFER:DCINPROF.PS

Please continue to provide feedback, it makes a difference. I would like
to know if the book helps with your job.

We will put the Guide into the Integrated Repository, to make it easier
to get. We looked into putting it in the LOS system, but we do not have
the budget to pay for that, so we can't do it.

We had the same distribution problem with a handout we put together for
the Overview of the World Wide Web seminar we do. Since we have no
administrative help we had engineers taking care of getting copies
made, and a software engineering manager (me) responsible for shipping
them out to folks who sent in requests for copies. We considered doing
the same for the Guide (which was developed by, and funded through, our
group), but we're worried that we will be swamped with requests.
