3525.0. "Customer & bad Internet address: [email protected]" by DYPSS1::DYSERT (Barry - Custom Software Development) Wed Nov 23 1994 10:33

The Postmaster returned the following mail to me (while I was logged into
my customer's machine). What I was doing was sending documentation
comments to the Internet address that's given in the Installation Guide
for UCX (though I suspect it isn't local to UCX). The (official public)
documentation for UCX says to send any comments to:

	[email protected]

When I did this (on behalf of my customer), my mail was rejected as
included below. I subsequently logged into my Digital machine and tried to
send mail to TNPUBS::DOC_QUALITY (apparently what this Internet address
translates to). MAIL reported this error:

%MAIL-E-NOSUCHUSR, no such user FORTEN at node VERBOS

My guess is that DOC_QUALITY is forwarded to VERBOS::FORTEN, who was
probably TFSOd (or quit - at least s/he isn't in ELF). For the sake of any
customers trying to get at us through this advertised address (and for my
sake in getting the Figures I'm seeking), I'm hoping that someone reading
this note will know what to do to fix the problem. I also am forwarding
this note to VERBOS::SYSTEM and TNPUBS::SYSTEM.

    Thanks!

Subject: comments re UCX031_IGUIDE.TXT

The Installation Guide for UCX031 is missing the figures (i.e. in the .TXT
file). The information these figures contain is important, so I would like
to see them included in the .TXT file. While they may be in the .PS file
it's inconvenient (and perhaps impossible for some) to print them.

If you have these figures in Ascii (or even in PostScript) I would appreciate
your sending them to me. Thanks.

Since this is about UCX, you might want to post your note in the
    LASSIE::UCX notes file.

3525.2A result of person leaving...TNPUBS::J_GOLDSTEINRun over on the Info HighwayWed Nov 23 1994 14:2012
Sigh, I knew this would happen with all the SES reorgs, attrition and
TFSPs. The person who monitored the account left the company, but
neglected to "unset" the forwarding. My guess is that right now, no one is
monitoring the account. When I get back to the office (second week in
Dec.), I'll try to shake a few trees and see if we can find someone to
take care of this...and if that fails, I'll probably try to take care of
    this myself.

Till then, do send your comments to the appropriate notes conference.
There's more of a chance it will be read.

I caught someone off-guard today when I answered my telephone. They had gotten
nothing but voicemail responses calling DECcies lately, and were rudely
surprised and a bit disconcerted when a live person actually answered the
telephone.

Thanks for the pointer, Mike. I posted it here because I figured this
had a bigger audience and that the issue was also bigger than UCX. As
it is, I accessed the PostScript version of the document which had the
info necessary to satisfy my customer.

Also, thank you, Joan, for shaking whatever trees you know about upon
your return. If Digital is to stay afloat it will be because of efforts
of folks like you (plural) who do "whatever it takes" to keep our
    customers satisfied.

Someone who has gotten heat for using NOTES forwarded the basenote to
me. Surprise! I know whom to send it to. NOTES is great!

As Joan said, the account FORTEN belonged to someone who resigned.
    We will fix this.

(And when I think of the hoops we jumped through to get the account set

> They had gotten nothing but voicemail responses calling DECcies lately...

One day not long ago I needed to call several persons in the Mill. I made
over a dozen calls there and got voicemail every time, including the times
I had the option to "press 0 for a live person". Then I called once more
and got a message that said

"We're sorry, but all voicemail lines are busy. Please call back."

	Click.

I thought to myself "Hell, even the robots aren't answering any more!"

That internet address should be fixed as it was reported to TNPUBS
the day following the initial posting... If you have anymore problems,
send mail to either Joan Goldstein (TNPUBS::) or myself and I will
    forward it to Joans group...

Thanks for the initial note... something like that can REALLY make
us look bad in the face of customers....

Thanks for your quick action, Pat. When I'm back at the customer's
(from my week of training) I'll give it a whirl.
