Corporate Software Inc. purchases 800-Software, Inc.
Corporate Software Inc. (CSI) of Norwood, Mass., today announced
that it has purchased 800-Software, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of
Digital and a reseller of microcomputer software and hardware products
to government, educational institutions, and corporate accounts. Terms
of the sale were not disclosed.
The agreement calls for 800-Software to operate as a wholly owned
division of CSI. 800-Software's nearly 300 employees will remain with
800-Software.
Digital acquired 800-Software in 1992. The subsidiary had been
managed by Digital's Personal Computer Business Unit.
This agreement will ensure that customers still have a choice of
how they manage their software assets -- through Digital's Software
Utility, a well-established international portfolio of services for
software distribution, licensing, upgrades, management, and support
offered by the Multivendor Customer Services business unit; or from
other vendors of their choice.
The Software Utility program, introduced in February 1994, is a
volume purchasing program for third-party software coupled with
complete software licensing, management tools, and services to reduce
customers' overall software cost of ownership. It includes the ability
to evaluate, acquire, distribute, upgrade, track and manage those
assets -- internationally, electronically, from customers' own
desktops.
800-Software, founded in 1982 as a mail-order software
distribution company, is a reseller of microcomputer software, hardware
and networking products. Headquartered in Richmond, Calif., it has
eight offices in the U.S. and a European office in the Netherlands.
Founded in 1983, Corporate Software is a leading international
provider of microcomputer software, support and systems integration
services for businesses and institutions. The company's services
include outsourcing of software support, technical training,
consulting, software integration, and migration management.

Interesting. I was doing some research on Software Utility (for a
training course) and learned that Corporate Software is Digital's
major competitor in this area.
Now: is Digital still offering Software Utility? I need to know,
'cause I'm supposed to be training salespeople in it...

| Hmm - I suppose this means that employee discounts through 800-SOFTWARE
are about to end.
