3315.0. "DIGITAL has it now! ..but you can't have it..." by JOBURG::HARRIS () Wed Aug 10 1994 15:53

Digital World Wide have defined a business plan to have our VARS
conduct 70% of our business and the remaining 30% will be managed
by ourselves. Also worldwide we are having an amount of business
contracted out to third parties...We obtain and hold the business
contract and then when necessary we will contract out the
      support. Two alarm bells ring!!!

      1. Do clients base a certain percentage of the decision to give
DIGITAL the contract on the quality of the work performed?

      2. These third parties do not have access to the tools and info
to maintain our products. There are too few people to
interface with these contractors. I understand that the big
problem is that only Digital has access to our systems and
         info. This is understandable.

How are we supporting our contractors? and
How are we supporting our VARS.
Now that the Disk business has been sold to Quantum (With the
support staff) how do we access information that up until now has
      been in notes?

Or is it yet another case of "Digital has it now...but you can't
      have it"?

Too often I have seen many many frustrated people (Yes clients)
wait days and days for DIGITAL to call back. ???

"Information is the backbone to our business"

      Ivan.

3315.1VARS and 3rd party access to our NOTES files?JOBURG::HARRISThu Aug 11 1994 13:325
I have just read a note in the TARGET conference that this is open to
    NON Digital persons.
What exactly are we sharing with VARS and or other third parties?

    Regards Ivan

What do you mean by "this"?

Generally, those outside Digital's network don't have access to our
notesfiles. There are selected files (ISVNET::ALPHA_AXP is an example)
where a Notes-News gateway is used to make notes visible as a newsgroup to
outside users.

ISVHUB::TARGET_HOTLINE is on the "outside" of the wall of security.
Digital and non-Digital people both have access to that conference,
read and write. But they do not have NOTES access to nodes inside.

Hello Steve, my apologies for the ambiguity of the last message.
I was refering to the "Target conference".
Of late I have received many many many complaints from our VARS that
they either never receive a call back from Digital or the call comes a
couple of days later. These Vars( and myself) have only heard about DPN
(Digital Partner Network) but for them they are extremely aggitated to
by Digitals "Information flow" and assistance (Or rather lack of) They
have complained but not even complaints seem to be taken seriously.
I am through this topic trying to find out the "Official" way Digital
deals with information flow to VARS. I am sure that right now in
Digital we would like to see a lot of our equipment and services being
sold. It seems we are not making it very easy. The VARS here have said
to me that they are being treated like the enemy or competitors rather
than Digital's best client. Some thoughts or pointers?
    Regards Ivan.
3315.5<What is on the "Open" side?>JOBURG::HARRISFri Aug 12 1994 08:429
    re.3
Hello Mark, What is on the "Open" side of the wall. Or rather how could
I obtain a listing of only the "Open" Conferences. I have people with
pockets bulging with money wanting to buy the correct product...if only
they could find some information like "Digital Public Documents"
PS Would anyone know if something like the SOC is available to the
Public. Compuserve information on Digital Products is rather outdated
but then again marketing is forbidden on Compuserve!
Thanks for the info. Regards Ivan.

Re: .5

There's LOTS of information available online to customers. More than I can
easily find inside Digital, to be honest.

The primary resource is Digital's Internet services: for World-Wide Web
browsers (Mosaic, Lynx, etc.) it's http://www.digital.com/info.html For
FTP access, ftp.digital.com. The entire current SOC is there as well as all
software SPDs, hardware infosheets, performance reports, whitepapers,
all issues of "Customer Update" and even release notes for most of our
compilers. All of the information is searchable and it is well-indexed.
Show it to your customers - they'll be thrilled.

The second resource is "Digital's Electronic Connection", which is sort of
an on-line DECdirect. This is free and is available by either telnet to
order.sales.digital.com or by modem at 800-234-1998. The info I can get from
the Electronic Connection which I can't find elsewhere is the Software
License Configurator which can give the exact part number and price for
software products on a specified system. (I can get prices from VTX PRICE,
but only if I know which part number, and I don't know where to find the
correlation between system model and license units except from the ECONN.)

(Note - from inside Digital, you can't telnet to the ECONN without an
expensive "crypto-key". I happen to have one, but most people don't.)

3315.7Our Clients and Potential will SMILE now.JOBURG::HARRISFri Aug 12 1994 13:569
Hello Steve, your message header makes a lot of cents.!!
Thanks a ton and now we can get the clients and potential clients to do
what normally would cost us time - They can now search for info
themselves. I wonder how many people inside the company know this?
Somehow we need somekind of pointer inside Digital to notify all
our employees that interface with Clients about what information is
available to them. Makes cents to them and to us. Our manpower can be
better utilized elsewhere. Do you have any suggestions as to how
everyone could be notified? Regards Ivan Harris.

I don't know about inside the company, but we heavily promote the Internet
server and the Electronic Connection in ads; lots of other WWW servers have
pages which point to ours.

I believe I've seen something in Digital Today about it as well.

Maybe by describing it here I've helped educate a few more employees about
what we have.
