3291.0. "better quotes via fax" by ODIXIE::KFOSTER (Kevin Foster) Tue Aug 02 1994 11:59

Here's a sales idea that would help the vendor with the best
    price/performance:

Advertise a fax number where customers can fax in competitors'
    quotes:

"Sure they gave you "discounts", but is it the best price?"

"Do you want one last chance to save money on your purchase?"

    	"Fax anyone's quote to 1-800-xxx-xxxx. You'll receive a better
quote in return -- usually within one business day."

While it would be nice to quote *every* item on the original
quotation, it would be sufficient to just quote those items
where we have the better price/performance. For similar but
non-identical products, a one-page comparison sheet would be
    sent along with the quote.

(Substitute whatever passes for an 800 number in your location.)

Also probably illegal as pricing info etc is provided in commercial
confidence. Sure this type of things happens but not this blatantly.

This is the crazy deal that we've come to expect buying cars - the "see me
last" syndrome. It drives most purchasers bonkers. Set your price fairly,
advertise, and you'll get the buyers. Telling prospective customers that
your prices are made of rubber will just make them feel that, no matter how
good a deal you gave them, they could have done better.

Re-reading my original I saw how the note could be interpreted
to mean flexible pricing from Digital.

That wasn't my intent. What I meant was, since our workstations
outperform other vendors at list price, why not give a list price
quote that beats the competition? Easily, without the normal
    high cost of sale.

As to the legality -- that I don't know about. I'd be surprised
if it was illegal for either the customer or Digital, since neither
party signs an agreement before receiving anything. Obviously
    a factor though.

As for the other replies -- don't you read Sales Update? ;-)

Right. That's what I like. Real short answers. Straight to the point. Don't
waist any bandwidth on explaining why something can or cannot work. Just keep it
brief . This is the right mindset we need to get out of this mess. Any other
suggestions? :(:(
