| That show is run by a third tier trade show/conference company.
I know a few people who work there, they usually have to give vendors
free space so as not to look bad

| We have very little database marketing and promotion funds right now.
At the time when the invitation circulated for this one, we had none.

3227.3 | big turnout, opportunity missed | NRSTA2::HORGAN | no teacher, no method, no guru | Fri Jul 01 1994 12:36 | 19 |
| While it is true that this is run by a "third tier" company who may
have to give away space, the event was very well attended. IBM was
there in force, with an estimated 30 people and a large area. Lotus
Notes and associated partners took up much of one of the areas.
Microsoft put together an area for itself and its partners. Lots of
small companies, and a few of the big ones (Oracle and other data base
vendors for example).
Digital was not present in any way that we could see. Sure, this is not
a "real" trade show, but I noticed that the attendees there came from
all over the country, as well as occasionally from outside the States,
and from all sorts of companies. It appeared to be a good place to get
some attention.
Okay, so we did not have a client server group when the invite went
out. DO we now? Isn't that one of our "core competencies?". Will we be
at future shows, whether this one or ones like it?

| We were at DB Expo in force (Late April?) It was a conscious decision
to do DB Expo, not this show. DB Expo was a higher-profile show,
better attended, better supported by Digital. Also, this one happened
at our year-end, traditionally a time of change at Digital. There is
no lack of focus on c/s selling.

| re:.3 There was a Digital Infoserver 1000 demo-ing some neat roadmap
software in one of the small booths downstairs. I think the vendor was
an OEM.
I didn't notice too many Digital systems in the booths. Its too bad
since many of the software vendors are porting/have ported their
software to Alpha. It would have been nice if they were showing it on
Alphas and not SUNs or Intel-based PCs (non-Digital).

| We were there in spirit.
Larry Elison's plenary speed on client server futures highlighted ORACLE
performance on clusters and ALPHAs. I noticed several folks near me taking
careful notes.
An INTERLEAF developer commented - you should see this on an Alpha.
Several vendors prouded announced - "We run on your platforms !"
Have a great 4th.

I wasn't at the show, but was given a rough description of what Ellison
said. Lots of good things are happening here, but if he actually was
making the benchmark claims I was told of, don't hold your breath waiting
for them...

Nice to know my product at least got some visibility, considering
how much of a secret InfoServers are in general within the company.

| The Infoserver is one of the best kept (for no reason) secrets. My
customer uses many of them, but mainly for Window Terminals. The only
problem is they only support a few users (about 8 I think) at a time.
Do we have a way of turbocharging these machines? Also, my customer
seems to believe that the Infoserver 150 has better performance than
the 1000, so he buys refurb instead of new.

I'm the project leader, not the product manager (big difference) and
I've sent mail to clear up some of the misconceptions in .9.
For any of you with InfoServer Questions, the conference is at
CDSRV::INFOSERVER or you can send me mail (but mail is often lower priority
since if I naser it in the conference I answer it for everyone.)
