    IBM said that it would offer a version of Sun Micro System's Solarics
    operating system on it Power PC based personal computers. The IBM
    machines, to be available next year, are part of an effort by Apple,
    IBM, and Motorola Inc. to break the stranglehold that Microsoft and the
    Intel have on personal computer market. Apple is the only major
    computer maker now shipping systems based on the PowerPC chip, which
    runs about as fast as Intel's top-of-the-line Pentium processor and is
    less expensive.
