subsystems (eg. Storageworks) business. By inferrence
the other units of the Storage Business Unit might
be on the block.

| | Hi Steve -

duly noted about the careful wording. This is a positive sign,
however, in that Senior Management responded to a plea for a statement
so that storage sales would not be impacted.

Digital, Quantum in negotiations on portions of Storage Business

Digital today acknowledged that the company is in negotiations
with Quantum Corp. for Quantum to acquire a portion of Digital's
Storage Business Unit. The discussions include Digital's magnetic
disk, DLT (Digital Linear Tape) tape drive, solid-state disk drive,
   and thin-film heads businesses.
Digital's Storage Subsystems and Video and Interactive
Information Services businesses are not part of the discussions.
Negotiations are continuing and an announcement will be made when
   appropriate.
"We are in the process of finalizing the strategic redirection of
Digital," said Robert B. Palmer, Digital's president and chief
executive officer. "One important element of that work is a close
examination of which businesses and areas of technology we need to
supply directly to our customers, and which areas make sense for us to
supply through strategic partnerships. Our negotiations with Quantum
concerning sale of a portion of our Storage Business are part of our
overall plan to return the company to profitability as quickly as
possible. This effort includes stringent cost controls, focus on those
areas where we can add unique value to our customers, and continued
staff and facility reductions. During this time we also have announced
several exciting new products, major competitive wins and new
   partnerships."
Quantum Corp. of Milpitas, Calif. is a leader in designing,
manufacturing and marketing advanced small-form-factor hard disk drives
based on Winchester technology for a broad range of computer systems,
including desktop workstations, personal computers and advanced
   notebook computers.

Digital in $400m disk drive sale

Digital of the US is reported by the Wall Street Journal to be
considering bids of up to $400m for it's (sic) disk drive business.
Negotiations have been conducted with Quantum Corp, who is emerging as
the most serious bidder, but also with Seagate Technology Inc and
    Hewlett-Packard.

| | Read in the local rag this morning that Quantum [sic] has offered $400
million for our disc drive business. The other players that are
interested is Seagate Tech and H.P. My question here would be the
obvious, is it worth $400 million and could we get more for it through
bargaining more with the interested parties? I think we can, but how
    much more?

I think half that is closer.
