    Article:  AT&T profits $1B, GIS operates at $57M loss

        AT&T reported a first-quarter net income of $1.09 billion, or 80
    cents a share.  Net income grew nearly 17 percent over last year's
    restated first-quarter profits, which were $936 million, or 69 cents a
    share, before the cumulative effects of accounting changes.
        The company posted a loss in the 1993 first quarter of $6.83
    billion, or $5.07 a share, after the required changes for retiree
    health and other benefits, separation and disability benefits and
    income taxes.
        Current-quarter revenues were $16.56 billion compared with $15.72
    billion in the year-ago quarter.
        Total revenues for AT&T Global Information Solutions roes nearly 3
    percent over the year-ago period to $1.53 billion, with product sales
    showing an improvement of 5 percent.
        THE BUSINESS UNIT REPORTED AN OPERATING LOSS OF $57 MILLION FOR THE
    QUARTER, COMPARED TO A LOSS OF $14 MILLION A YEAR AGO RESTATED FOR THE
    ACCOUNTING CHANGE ON POSTEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS.

    Microsoft has reached an out of court settlement with STAC and will be
    paying Stac royalties of $1 million per month for 43 months. Microsoft
    will also be taking an equity position in STAC.
