Now, this is what might be called a real good rumor - mandatory
employee vacation time. This place gets curiousor and curiousor every
day. Much better than the week by week stuff. Real excitment in our
lives.
I hope somebody with literary aspirations id keeping real good
notes for the book "DEATH BY DIGITAL". I'd pay $24.95 for it.

I've heard that the rumor is true, but the dates are 7/5-8 and
12/26-30. Word is that the company will be closed those weeks, with
minimal exceptions. We have the option of taking the time as vacation
time, or time off without pay.
Usually slow weeks anyway. We've usually shipped everything that wasn't
bolted down by the end of June to make Q4 numbers.

this sounds great to me! With our current layoffs, it might be the only
chance we get to take any time off till next year...
Of course, this won't apply to customer support since I'm pretty sure
that customers won't appreciate not getting helped for two weeks
cause we need to save money!!!
bummer....

vacations, that the people left have a difficult time getting any work done,
especially if it requires anything from anybody else.

Anyone in Finance and Operations support would have a hell of a time
trying to close books week two July..... The books are always closed
week 1.
Has it ever happend? Nobody in Finance is encouraged to take week 1 or
week 2 off in July. Year end fiscal closing, it's Hell week(s) folks

Now if this involuntary time off becomes fact instead of
rumor, then it would be nice to know ahead of time to be
able at least to make personal plans. But that would require
some company planning, which we seem to be constitutionally
unable to do. The way things are going, we'd probably find
out on Friday, July 1.
Actually the rumor I heard was that the "leadership" decided
between salary freeze and one week closing in July.
Sigh,

Not ok for manufacturing. If you recall, we can't build some
of our systems fast enough.
Me personally, I couldn't care less if we take the week off.
I'm coming back from vacation July 2nd and another week off would
suit me fine. Anything at this point to not get so depressed.

3137.21 | why plan? | NWD002::RANDALL_DO | | Tue Jun 07 1994 12:15 | 9 |
| The issue is planning. We can all take our vacations in the same week
or weeks, given time to plan. You don't wake up one day and say "I
think I'll take the family on vacation today." For those that have
planned to take the week or weeks off that Digital may be planning, it
would work out. For others, July could be a month where no work gets
done - forced time off, coupled with planned vacation and others'
planned vacations could mean that the people we need aren't here in
July. What a way to kick off the new, new Digital.

Sounds screwy. The reason for furloughs is so sales can catch up with
(over)production. Car manufacturers shut lines down and furlough
people when sales are sluggish and finished inventories are growing.
If we're not in that position, what would management hope to achieve?

Subject: ERRONEOUS VACATION - RUMORS 1
To: See Below
CC: See Below
I have seen a number of erroneous messages being passed around the
system which indicate there will be a forced vacation the week of 7/5
- 7/8. This is absolutely untrue and certainly from a service
standpoint has no logical merit.
I would like each of you to communicate this to your folks along with
the following:
During this particular time, we must be diligent in guarding
against rumors, fears, and unrealistic concerns. If there is
ever a question about some communication and its validity,
check first and clearly forward absolutely nothing which you
do not know for sure. We need to keep focused on our people
and our customers. These rumors are distracting and a waste
of energy needed for the important task of renewing this
company.

JP:rs
