Subject: Announcement - Digital Consulting Europe 1

    **THIS COMMUNICATION IS FROM GRESHAM BREBACH AND VINCENZO DAMIANI**

    We regret to announce that Sergio Giacoletto is leaving Digital to pursue
    other opportunities. Sergio has been with Digital for 20 years in key
    European managerial roles including Vice President of Consumer, Process
    and Transportation Customer Business Unit, Vice President of Digital
    Services and Enterprise Integration Services, and numerous other business
    and technology roles. We would like to take this opportunity to thank
    Sergio for his outstanding contribution to Digital and the building of our
    Digital Consulting and other business in Europe.

    Ron Bohlin, Vice President of Strategic Services for Digital Consulting,
    will be taking over leadership for Digital Consulting in Europe on an
    interim basis. He will have full responsibility for all aspects of the
    Digital Consulting practices, business performance, resource management
    and delivery of functional excellence, for Europe to achieve its customer
    satisfaction, employee satisfaction and financial performance goals.
    Ron will continue reporting to Gresham Brebach, Vice President, Digital
    Consulting, and will become a member of the European Management board.
    He will begin working with the Digital Consulting European Management Team
    immediately in carrying out plans for Q4 and FY95.

    Ron came to Digital in August, 1993 to develop and lead Strategic Services
    for Digital Consulting. He came from Analog Devices, Inc. where he was
    the Vice President of Corporate Marketing and Business Development. Prior
    to that Ron was a partner with McKinsey & Co., and leader of McKinsey's
    worldwide computer industry practice. His career also includes nearly 5
    years with Digital in the late 70's. We are pleased to have Ron accept
    this critical position for the company and trust that he and the Digital
    Consulting European Management Team will receive your support to achieve
    their business goals.

    did he jump or was he pushed?Since,it is expected that we miss budget
    for revenue by a reasonable bit and expenses by 2000$ per employee.....

    I've heard two rumours:

    1) He's lost faith in the Company and legged it.
    2) DC is due to be either sold off, chopped off or plain disbanded, and
       he resigned rather than oversee it.

    Like most rumours, take with a large pinch of salt!

    Laurie.

    Here's another: He's gone to AT&T Europe, which is currently headed by
    former DECcie Pier Carlo Falotti.

    Which doesn't preclude either of the interpretations in .2, of course.

3118.4Terrible news...LOVADA::SCHERRERPatrick - Corp Strategic AlliancesTue May 31 1994 09:284
    This is such a bad news that I'm not surprised there is no more comment
    about it.

3118.5So whats terrible about it??BUSSTP::DWOODDavid Wood, AyrTue May 31 1994 10:5812

	Re .4

	The why bothers me far more than the who.
	Until I know and understand that, then I could
	not possibly comment on whether this is terrible
	news or not.

	Does anybody know for a fact why he is leaving??

.2 is very accurate.
3118.7Model for "jumped or pushed?"CARROL::SCHMIDTCynical OptimistWed Jun 01 1994 18:5517

        RE .1 "did he jump or was he pushed?"

        Don't know about this case but, in the usual absence of
        information in the memos, my speculation is that if

            The first person mentioned in the announcement memo is
            the replacement, then the original one was pushed,

            The first person mentioned is the original, then (s)he
            jumped/left voluntarily.

        The model predicts that this guy left voluntarily, but that
        Bill Steul was pushed.  FWIW.

3118.10Reasons for LeavingGVPROD::ROUSSETValuing differencesFri Jun 03 1994 03:5221
3118.2 is very accurate (as already stated by GVPROD::DOIGTE::DonChisholm). I
would add that it is only normal personal ethics for a professional of that
caliber to leave a company when he/she is in disagreement on fundamental
strategies. Top management must be united; just because we see numerous
violations of this principle didn't convince Sergio that he should be one more
example.

3118.3 isn't exceedingly inaccurate either, inasmuch as Sergio left to take
another job. Whether or not he left to go to AT&T isn't something that he
wished to discuss with a wide audience.

Re 3118.4, I initially thought that the news is very bad indeed. Then I was
reminded of Rwanda, Bosnia, Ethiopia, and plutonium. I can only guess that not
many people are reacting to Sergio's departure in this notesfile, because 1)
they, like hundreds, reacted by addressing personal messages to him directly,
and 2) some of them are busy taking the logical steps implied in the 1st
paragraph.

Regards, Stephane.

3118.11PASTIS::MONAHANhumanity is a trojan horseFri Jun 03 1994 04:045
    	He was certainly one of the hardest working managers I have ever
    known. On one occasion, having pondered about something I thought was
    wrong I wandered down to my terminal at home at 4 a.m. and sent him
    electronic mail. I had an answer within 10 minutes, and yes, we are in
    the same time zone.
3118.12Digital needs many more like himCTHQ::MOHNblank space intentionally filledFri Jun 03 1994 10:1413
    He was also one of the most *human* managers that I have ever worked
    for. A few years ago I was given an assignment in Geneva a couple of
    levels down from Sergio. The day I arrived in the office I got an
    e-mail from Sergio welcoming me to Geneva and inviting me to drop in to
    his office to say hello. Two days later he dropped into MY office,
    just to say hello and get to know me a bit. I was impressed; none of
    my management in the US had ever done such a thing. DEC, er Digital,
    needs far more human beings in high places, not fewer. He will be
    missed, sorely.
