I believe that the last ones sold over here on the right side of
the pond, out of IMM, went for 25.00 sterling, which equates to about
$37.00.
Whacha mean, old - we only stopped selling them three years ago!
Six years or so ago, I paid 200.00 for my DECmate II, but that did
include maintenance for as long as I still had it, and the same for the
LQP02 for which I paid 100.00. Maintenance is return to Winnersh
(Reading).
If the prices being asked include maintenance, I'd say they were
OK, otherwise, you are right - they are a bit high. IMHO of course.
Why don't you consider a PC and Microsoft Word? That wouldn't cost
too much more would it? There is even a Word Processor bundled in with
Windows if you don't want to pay out for Word. That Word Processor is
the biggest selling WP Package, but only 'cos it is bundled in with
Windows as a no cost option.

| Even a bare-bones low-end PC setup with Windows and a printer will
probably cost you $800-$1000. And of course you can go up from there...
The word processor that comes with Windows is pretty lean, too (I
presume .1 refers to WRITE), although functional for basic editing,
with basic formatting controls. Course, I remember when the formatting
capabilities of WordStar were state-of-the-art, and WRITE holds its
own against that. But you won't get three balanced columns
wrapping around 256-color graphics, and no automatic table of contents
or index, or hyperlinks to audio and video, which of course every
document needs ;^)
Then there's the dedicated word-processor systems from Smith Corona
et al. I have been seeing a few of those appearing on the discount
shelves at places like Sears. Don't know how much, and of course then
you're totally limited to one function. But if that is really the only
thing you are interested in doing, that might be a cheap and easy way
to do it. I have never used one of these, but I imagine they would
give you about the same level of functionality as WRITE?

| > How does one go about determining the price and possibly purchasing old
> hardware?
1. Get yourself TFSO'd.
2. Point out to your cc manager that purchasing old hardware is
supposed to be possible. Following is the policy as of two years
ago. Maybe there is a more current version somewhere.
3. Hope that your manager is feeling guilty for having laid you
off and will interpret this policy in a manner favorable to you.
In particular, if what you want isn't specifically on the list below,
suggest to your manager that it should be considered equivalent
to something that is. This has been known to work in the past.
Good luck.

| re: .0, .1, et al
Windows? A perfectly good word processor is available that will
run on a low end XT which can be had "new" (probably reconditioned,
or surplus warehouse stock) for about $300 plus a $75 monochrom
monitor. Why buy a used DECmate at any price when the same
functionality is available on an IBM compatible? Unless you buy two,
one for spare parts, if the DECmate breaks, repairs will cost more
than the whole new clone. Clone parts are dirt cheap and available
from a multitude of sources.
WPS-PC is a WPS-8 clone, developed by Exceptional Business Solutions,
which runs on MS-DOS. At $275 it's at the upper end of the WP range,
but has the familiar GOLD key feel, and a few enhancements (though
I do miss column cut and paste.)
std disclaimer: i have no connection with EBS, except as a satisfied
customer.
