What would you do? Gordon Gecko has just told you he thinks Digital is underperforming. He believes that the company is worth more broken up than as a whole. He has hired you to develop a plan that will separate the cash cows from the dogs. Gordon isn't interested in middle management and you can add, delete, or redeploy resources on other operations or sell them off. Gordon also doesn't think much of large corporate and area overheads and would like operations streamlined. Gordon will finance his takeover with debt so strong cashflow from operations is essential or sale of assets. What would you do?

I'd tell Gordon (who ever he is?), that stating the blindlingly obvious is no use unless you write it in a book on Consultancy or Management. Then I'd use a Low Value Order to buy same and send it to the SLT. Maybe it would worry the SLT more than it does me, and it doesn't! %-) | |||||

I would rip the company apart, running under the assumption that its worth more apart than together. So which parts do you believe are winners and which are losers? For example, with the right cost structure, VMS support could be very profitable, because of its existing installed base. Unfortunately, the operative word is "the right cost structure". Digital does some things well and some things poorly. But we aren't extraordinary in any one piece (to the best of my knowledge). Present readership always excluded... |
