To: The office of Enrico Pesatori
I just received Digital's winter PC catalogue. As an employee of Digital
seeing such a high quality advertising piece made me feel good about the
company. I would appreciate it if you could forward the following to the
people responsible for this catalogue. I feel they've done an excellent job
and are well worthy of praise, as is the whole PC division.

| I particularly liked the volume discount on DECwrite, listed as:
DECwrite V2.0 for Windows, Volume Discount: 10 copies for $254 each -- $2362
(You can sort of tell that DECwrite isn't a math package.)

2949.3 | The technical explanation | LATVMS::BRANAM | | Tue Mar 22 1994 12:21 | 5 |
| Those are IAPX Virtual dollars. You set the DS register (dollar
segment register) to the number of dollars, which is multiplied
by the VM (volume mapping) register, using the virtual mapping
factor of 1.07539865. Really, this is all well-established computer
science, as naturally as 2^16 is 65536.

2949.4 | PC sales = Alpha? | ODIXIE::PERRAULT | | Tue Mar 22 1994 13:01 | 6 |
| An interesting bit of info. regarding the PC unit. If all alpha sales
are currently "about" $2.0b and PC business is expected to be in that
range, then the other $10.0 (total $14.0b) is not very clear. I know
that Alpha sales are ramping up, but that will be a steep climb.
Just an observation.

There's still a bunch of VAX sales, storage, components & services.
From the last Palmer DVN the breakdown of the company was the following:
Systems BU 40% (VAX and Alpha systems, software & networks)
PC BU 10%
Storage BU 9%
Components & Periph 9%
Digital Consulting 14%
MCS 30%
counted twice 12%-

I'm glad the catalogues designers got to see the feedback.

PS A note to the moderator. No I didn't explicitly ask if I could post
this mail message here. If that is a problem just delete this
reply, it's not worth bothering anybody to try and get explicit
permission.

| It will be a steep climb, but it's nice to see some units turning around.
The PC BU at 10% is just about breaking even.
The Video segment of Components & Periph, about 5% is running close to 30% PBT.
The biggest problem we still need to work on is the Systems BU.

Maybe not the right note, but not being a Marketing buff, I just
wanted to ask 'Whom' might be able to get a DECpc AXP 150 medallion
on the front of the box used for the DEC Professional April '94 mag.
Page 51 has a picture of the "AXP 150" that's missing a medallion in
the front. Could be an Intel inside, a Pentium, a 433ST, etc, etc.
Just in case they wanted to use that machine for another
picture in the near future. Probably not a big deal to most, but
with all the flavors I see go down the line, the Medallion is the
only thing that tells me what's inside. (Except of course the
Intel Inside sticker that goes on the front panel, and the outside
of the shipping box.)
I can't wait to see what's in the works for the
AlphaGeneration stickers and T-shirts, but I hope they remember
to stick 'em on anything that moves off that production line.

2949.9 | when will we see a DEC PC stores? | STAR::ABBASI | iam thinking about doing it | Fri Apr 08 1994 17:06 | 16 |

why don't DEC open a DEC PC stores to sell its PC's related equipment?
if DEC starts by opening one or 2 stores in masusususteteetsts as a
trial basis to see how they work out, may be if they are successful
they can open more stores through the country.
i'v used to see IBM PC stores (have not seen some for a while though),
so, why can't DEC open a PC stores? it can;t cost that much to do and
it will help spread the word about our PC's to the public also. i
suggest to open the store in big busy mall, and fill it with our PC's
and printers and stuff like that.
why no one have thought of this before?

2949.13 | Leave the retailing to retailers! | USHS01::HARDMAN | Massive Action = Massive Results | Sat Apr 09 1994 19:11 | 16 |
| Why would Digital need PC stores? IBM doesn't have 'em, Compaq doesn't
have 'em, Dell doesn't have 'em, Gateway doesn't...... Get my point?
There are zillions of PC retailers out there, selling any and every
brand they can get their hands on. We just need to get Digital products
into THEIR stores. Then they can carry the overhead of retail space,
constant employee turnover, inventory (that often sells below cost as
prices drop so fast!), etc. Digital needs to focus on making computers.
Let the folks that are in the retail business do the retailing. (Even
Wal-Mart is selling PC's now!)
Digital PC's are showing up in some of the local retail ads in the
daily business section of the Houston papers. At last...

> Why would Digital need PC stores? IBM doesn't have 'em, Compaq doesn't
IBM does have something called an outlet store. (albeit a few) I
saw this a few weeks ago on some TV magazine show. I think it was
way to (cheaply) deal some of their excess inventory.
But, more to the point, I do agree that getting our products to
retails stores should be the focus. And from what I've heard, it
will happen fairly soon.

| IBM has only one outlet store - just opened.
We don't need a Digital PC store - we need to have our products alongside
Dell, Compaq and IBM in the existing superstores which have a much larger
customer base than we could ever dream of getting with our own stores.
We do have products which can be competitive in these markets.

| Yesterday, I was checking out the PC's available at the local Sam's
Warehouse Club. They had IBM, Compaq, Dell, ALR and Packard Bell
systems available. (The best deal I saw was a Compaq 486 DX2/50 with
two floppy drives, 340 meg hard drive, 8 meg of ram and a 15 inch
monitor capable of up to 1024x768 display. All for $1,699!) No way
would a single-vendor retail store be able to compete with places like
this.
Digital needs to have their systems sitting next to those other brands
in existing outlets!!!

pleasent lane mall in nashua (near ZKO) at the boarder of new hamshire
and massesususteetets.
i wonder what took us sooo long to put our printers for sale in the
mall and why we did not do this years ago ?

Lechmiere in Framingham, MA. has had DEC printers for
a long time--maybe over a year.
Someone even fixed the sales demo unit so it doesn't wrinkle
the paper anymore.
