2942.0. "fyi: Lawyer sentenced in DCU fraud case" by NECSC::BIELSKI (Stan B.) Wed Mar 16 1994 17:35

Newton lawyer gets 10-year prison term in credit union fraud
(by John H. Kennedy - Boston Globe March 16, 1994)

A Newton lawyer convicted in the massive fraud that pushed the Barnstable
Community Federal Credit Union into insolvency was sentenced to 10 years in
prison.

US District Judge William Young told Robert Cohen that he violated the
trust of his clients, the Barnstable credit union and the Digital Employees
Federal Credit Union, and became "house counsel to massive fraud".

Young, however, called Cohen "a continuing enigma" who was praised for
service to his community, but "could have frustrated" the scheme had he done
his duty as a lawyer.

Cohen, who has been suspended from practicing law after more than 30 years,
and three other men were convicted last July of conspiracy, bank fraud and
money laundering.

Cohen, 58, was accused of preparing documents that concealed from auditors,
examiners and officials that the three other men were recipients of the loans.

The two central figures in the scheme were James K. Smith, a prominent
Cape builder, whjo was sentenced to 15 years in prison last month, and
Richard D Mangone, former president of the Digital credit union and cofounder
of Barnstable, who failed to appear at his sentencing and is at large.

Re Mangone at large: another example of the Mass. justice system at work.
He should have been held without bail, but you'll never see that happen in MA
except for murder and the like.
I agree with .0; he is probably out of the country and therefore out of reach
of the law.

Nope, not with Clinton, the rumor is that he is behind the Bush
Brothers for elections. And also that he is financially advising
    Ross Perot.

.0 refers to a District Judge. Doesn't that mean it was a Federal

Re: .9

You must have been referring to .5, which said:

>> Re Mangone at large: another example of the Mass. justice system at work.

You are correct. The case is being tried in Federal Court (US District Court
means Federal Court, Massachusetts district).
