2939.0. "Bring your Hobby to Work" by VORTEX::NASENG::ROMANO () Mon Mar 14 1994 17:32

Everyone knows that a lot has changed in the company over the last few years.
One thing that I think has changed is that we don't know how to have fun
anymore. I know its hard to even think about having fun when people are
getting layed off, moved around, and being pressured to work harder, but
maybe a bit of fun is just what we need to put some energy, teamwork and
conviction back into the projects that we work on.

I have wanted to do something about this for a while now, but I haven't been
able to come up with a way to get started. So I thought that I would just
put a note in this conference and see what happened.

For me, the time when I am working the hardest and enjoying it the most is
when I am working on one of my hobbies. There is a certain drive that is
unstoppable when I am working on a new fly (I fly fish and tie flies) or when
I am trying to shoot a bulleye in my archery league. Imagine if that kind of
commitment could be brought to work by each of us every day.

The thought is that some of our enthusiasm for our hobbies might rub off on
our work and the people we work with. I would like to suggest that people
organize Bring your Hobby to Work days. You could do it at your group,
organization or facility level. You could do it at lunch time and it wouldn't
cost the company anything.

And maybe your project would get done and you would still have a smile on your
face!

So, what do you all think?

Alot of CSC work is on the phone with a headset and that leaves hands free
for "other" occupations like hobbies. I think its a great idea.

For myself, I don't think Digital would appreciate me roostin around the
buildings :( ...

    Great IDEA!

I like to work on computers for my hobby...

What do you think, should I bring my computers into work or just
do my job with computers we have at work?

    Life is nothing without passion...

instead of working on Computers -- today work is my hobby...)

Interesting thought, as most of the UK Board of Management seem to be
racing Yachtsmen, the image of customers arriving in DECpark in Reading
to see large racing yachts in the carpark and directors walking around
in brightly coloured foul weather clothing could bring a smile to a
depressed workforce......I might even make a trip up from the Solent
    office to see it......

I'm into music composition. I'm usually working on a tune in my head
as a background process while I work. I'd imagine many (if not most)
of the musician types in the company have a similar habit. :)

Nice thought but....

I've two hobbies... Amateur radio and singing. Bringing my ham gear
into the office area is a tad difficult... my antenna is 32 feet across
    and wouldn't quite fit. 8*)

But my other avocation is barbershop harmony. Now there are some
possibilities there. I sing with a quartet called the Bostones, and we
do about a dozen performances every year. I might be able to talk them
into showing up at the PKO cafeteria some lunch time.. Could be fun.

Any other barbershoppers out there that would like to warble a few
notes? (I'm a bass, so we'd need a Lead, Tenor and Bari)

I believe there are alot of groups which 'bring there hobby to work'.
Take a look at the easynotes.lis file lately? I think this is good to
some point in that the participation of the hobby can be facilitated by
our company. Although work always comes first of course...

2939.13Bring your Hobby to Work DayVORTEX::NASENG::ROMANOTue Mar 15 1994 23:3930
Thanks for all of the interesting replies. When I put the note in I
wasn't sure what the response would be.

What I am thinking about now is to actually plan and have a

"Bring your Hobby to Work" day.

Maybe something in the cafeteria during the afternoon snack time. People
could bring in the quilt that they designed a new pattern for, or a chair
that they seasoned each piece of wood for. People could bring some
special things in, set them up in the Cafe and share them with others.
I hope that by sharing the things that people hold special
to them that maybe Digital might be a better place to work. Who knows,
maybe your boss collects stamps just like you do. Or, maybe someone
in that group that you have been trying to work with loves orchids just
like you do. These kinds of common interest and passions might just
make a difference in our environment at Digital.

I work in ZKO, so if anyone else in ZKO would like to help plan such an
event please let me know, and we can make it happen. The rest of you
might consider doing something in your own facility.

    p.s.
After reading some of the replies, some hobbies might be more feasible
then others for this. I am an archer, and I don't think that security
would be happy about me bringing my compound bow into the building. So
be creative! Maybe you have another hobby that lights you up. Or
maybe you can take some pictures and bring in some accessories that you
    could show off with.

What ever happened to the "On my Own Time" programs they used to run in the
70's and 80's, where folks brought in artwork that they had created for
a "show" complete with awards?

I've been toying with the idea, too. As I mentioned in an earlier
note, my hobby is barbershop quarteting... I will be singing tonite at
a show in Boston, and will talk with the rest of the fellas to see if
they are interested in doing a short (20 or 30 minutes) at some
noontime at the PKO cafeteria. For free of course.

The rook drills down to get the seed once planted, rather than just
the loose ones on the surface that the pigeons get.

The local farmer and gamekeeper, who's land I shoot, class them as
vermin, and I'm happy to go with their definition.

I live, breathe, sleep and dream computing, much to my wife's dismay, so I
already practice my hobby full time. I can vary the flavor of it by reading
the PC and MAC notes conferences at lunch time. For a change, I switch over to
woodworking (more notes!), and to keep fit, karate. Maybe I could combine
things by breaking dead pc boards in the cafeteria with my bare hands ;^)
