we work too much days during the year. i suggest to raise the holiday
to 3 months per year instead of the little 10 working days most
of us get every year.
at this rate we'll burn out in our youth and by the time we get
to retire we'll be all used up.
we need more time for our loved ones.

| Re: New Year's
Okay, so I missed the exact date. The point was, New Year's wasn't listed, and
we get it as a holiday. It falls on one side or the other of the calendar year
dividing point, so it is possible (as it was in 1993) for January 1 and
December 31 of the same year to be holidays, and for the following year not to
have a New Year's holiday if you go by strict calendar days off. If you
consider New Year's to be the first holiday of the year, even if you actually
get the day off in the preceding year, it seems to be a lot simpler (at least
it does to me).
And no, I didn't get 1/3/94 off, either...

2857.24 | holiday/vacations what is acutally the difference | RUTILE::HOEFSMIT | Old Sins Cast Long Shadows | Wed Jan 19 1994 16:37 | 22 |

You're equating "holidays" to "vacation".
>>> you're right they are different. There are not that many in Holland,
only when particular things are during the week like xmas/eastern.
But from governement only:
The queens birthday and once every 5 year the 5th of May (when the year
end at 0 or 5)
because that's the end of the 2nd world war
In Germany there are government mandated holidays. A lot. That's why they
have that big amount of 55 days of. They have a lot of bridge days. Holland
doesn't have them.
But normally I don't know when I'm off, I'm almost never in Holland so I
sometimes find out when I get in the office that there is a holiday.
Because DEC is an American based company, we get days off if for instance
xmas is in the weekend.
ciao,
Michiel

As people who do write in FORTRAN know:

That goes for PROGRAMMERS as well.

2857.27 | There are no 55 free days in Germany! Why such barumors? | KBOMFG::KUISLE | | Thu Jan 20 1994 05:28 | 30 |
| I'm trying to sum up all free days in whole Germany:
1. Neujahr may be working day
2. Karfreitag Friday, always working day
3. Ostermontag Monday, always working day
4. Maifeiertag may be working day
5. Christi Himmelfahrt may be working day
6. Pfingstmontag Monday, always working day
7. Tag der Deutschen Einheit may be working day
8. Bu- und Bettag Wednesday, always working day
9/10. Weihnachten may be working day
11. Heilig Abend / Silvester may be working day
In some states within Germany there are additional free days, up to 3.
The minimum legal vacation is 3 weeks, (exactly 18 working days, and Saturday
included as a working day). The individuell amount of vacation varies from
15 to 32 days, depending on the company you work for and on your contract.
So let's try to maximize:
Assume, all goverment related days are working days (I think it's impossible),
then you get 11 days. Let you live in a state with 3 additional free days, give
14 days. And now you are working for a company which gives you 32 vacation
days give 45 days!! ... in opposite to rumors with 55 days !!!
And let's minimize:
Minimum from the above 11 mentioned is about 6. Plus 15 days minimum vacation
gives 26 days.

The people are working different hrs/per week ranging from 35 to 40. It depends
on the company, the department, the position and sometimes on the individual.
But is's obviously, that the salery you get is also depending on your working
time.
> Did you also count that Digital Germany was closed till the 10th of January
KBO had closed during the timeframe from Christmas to New Year and each
employee had to spent her/his vacation time. And I think, the same is valid
for the rest of Digital Germany.

Christi Himmelfahrt is always Thursday, so it's a day you get off every year.
I thought DEC observed the max of all the holidays for both predominantly
Protestant and Catholic regions, which would add to that list:
Hl. Drei Knige, can fall on any day.
Fronleichnam, always a Thursday.
Mari Himmelfahrt, can fall on any day.
Allerheiligen, can fall on any day.

I (and a few others) found this decision a little strange, considering
