2678.5 | Perhaps System Mangled? | NYOS01::LABOMBARD | Nous Sommes Du Soleil | Tue Sep 21 1993 17:33 | 10 |

We have recently (yesterday) gone through a restructuring of our
local cluster (read downsized!).
Although I do not know what happened to these, other notes on SUBWAY::
have made a transition and should be around, as others have noted.
There may be an announcement on TURRIS::EASYNET_CONFERENCES.

2678.6 | SUBWAY was changed over the weekend | MROA::NICHOLS | | Tue Sep 21 1993 17:36 | 8 |
| The SUBWAY cluster was merged with another cluster at a New Jersey
site (Princeton, I think). The new cluster is called NYOSS or
NYO or some such (I'll try to find out the precise name). They
were planning to keep the SUBWAY name as an alias so that notes
file access wouldn't get hosed, but perhaps it has a new node
address which hasn't been updated at your nearest router database.
I'll post more info if I can find it.

2678.7 | It's now NYOSS1.. But.. | NYOS02::ROTHMAN | IPL31, or bust.. | Tue Sep 21 1993 19:25 | 15 |
| Actually, the old SUBWAY cluster of 8700's and 6200's was replaced with
2 4600's this weekend. The machines are named NYOS01, and NYOS02 with a
cluster alias of NYOSS1. For, compatibility purposes, a 3100 with an
alias of SUBWAY was also temporarily glued into the cluster. I don't
know why the conf's aren't there, but I'll drop a vax-o-gram to the
system manglers..
From NCP on NYOSS1..

2678.8 | regression | CVG::THOMPSON | Who will rid me of this meddlesome priest? | Wed Sep 22 1993 08:12 | 12 |
| The renaming of the SUBWAY cluster is sad. Replacing a real name with
a sequence of letters and numbers is a step backwards, away from the
approachability and community of the past and a return to the days of
operating for the computers rather than the users.
Names like BMT and IRT (names of previous nodes in the SUBWAY cluster
have meaning and character for lots of people. They are the names of
subway lines in the City. Now we see bland names symbolic of a location
and, presumably, an organization to those who know the code. I thought
we'd grown past such.

change in the name of the organization...

2678.11 | regression prompts digression | QBUS::M_PARISE | Southern, but no comfort | Wed Sep 22 1993 13:44 | 11 |
| Re: .8 interesting observation
I am in agreement with this thought. I feel this is just another
indication of the lack of personality of the new Digital image. This
apparent distancing from the personal (associative/symbolic) ties
which exude warmth and togetherness, toward the de-humanizing
mediocrity of anonymity is a classic sign of an organization losing
touch with the people with whom it deals (both employees and customers).
See also note 2681 ...kinda along the same lines.

2678.12 | Customer Satisfaction? | NYOS02::ROTHMAN | IPL31, or bust.. | Wed Sep 22 1993 13:57 | 11 |
| I think the renaming was a poor idea. Apparently it was more important
for the Internal Systems Group (I forget their DECronym this week) to
keep a standard name for their "site servers" than make it easy for
their "customers" (meaning us). So now we have to run around and get
our new Vaxmail address changed on all the mail distribution list's
we're on, change MTS routing, change ELF, blah-blah... What a pain..
I appreciate ISG upgrading the machines, but, damn, SUBWAY should have
been kept as the name..
