2507.0. "MS-DOS V5 unlimited license?" by CSOA1::TEATER (Fight the Good Fight) Sun May 23 1993 02:54

Does Digital have an unlimited license for Microsoft DOS V5 for
internal use? I have heard rumors and have searched many notes file
but can not find any shred of evidence to support this.

I want to upgrade my internal PC but want to do it the right way.

you say DOS V5, do you mean DOS V6?

I read about this in DECSTATION, can't remember the note number.
Basically we (Digital) have a royalty-free agreement with Microsoft.
Any PC used for support Digitals customers(ie printing overhead slides
NOT) may get the software from the SSB for the $7.50 media cost. No VP
approval needed. Its not a right to copy agreement, you still need the
kit, one per pc. It comes with an upgrade to the DOS User Guide.

I must have ordered 100+ kits for the 3 US Customer Support Centers,
and haven't had a problem. Needed is badge, street address, CC,
mailstop, statements of use of the PC, quantity, name.

-.1> you say DOS V5, do you mean DOS V6?

Nope, V5 (specifically DEC version) is what I am interested in. I am
using 3.3 and need bigger disk partitions than 32mb.

Thanks for the pointer to the DECSTATION notes file. I would have
never thought of it when searching through easynotes.lis

I have reposted all of this note/replies there, seems more appropriate.

    To close off this topic:

There is NO royalty-free agreement for MS-DOS 6.0 Upgrade kits from
Microsoft. Support Centers fall under a specific exception in the
contract where we can provide them MS-DOS 6.0 new hardware kits.

If you want to upgrade a DECpc system from MS-DOS 5.0 to MS-DOS 6.0,
you need to purchase a retail MS-DOS 6.0 Upgrade kit, either from
800-SOFTWARE or another Microsoft software distributor (Egghead, etc.)

Please do not order either the MS-DOS 6.0/Windows 3.1 kit, or the
MS-DOS 6.0 kit which are manufactured in the SSBs. These kits are for
    new hardware shipments only.
