    looking for a missing conference is to search (either in topic 2.* or
    by using DIR/TITLE) TURRIS::EASYNET_CONFERENCES.

    I also can see the node in my local decnet database but cannot
    connect to it.

    It is my understaning if you can see the node in your decnet
    database it doesnt actualy confirm that the node is still there
    or if the node name or address has changed

    Regards

| 2482.5 | Here's how to display the corporate node registration info | MAZE::FUSCI | DEC has it (on backorder) NOW! | Thu Apr 29 1993 10:51 | 20 |
| | If you want to know the "official" corporate status of any node (hidden or
non-hidden) at any site, the correct way to do it is to go to the source:
	$ VTX EASYNET
Then pick item "3 NODE REGISTRATION".
Then pick item "2 - Node Registration Procedure".
Then pick item "6 - DISPLAY A NODE". Although most of the menu items are
restricted, any employee can access this menu item.
Then enter the protocol type (in this case "D"), and the node name (in this
case "LOSER").
You will receive a screen of information about the node, or the indication
that it does not exist (useful to see if anyone already has used a node
name you want to register).

| | > It is my understaning if you can see the node in your decnet

 > or if the node name or address has changed
Absolutely. Your local database is just a file which says (e.g.)
"when I say node name XXXX it means node address AA.NNN".
There is no guarantee that node XXXX exists, that it ever existed,
it now has address AA.NNN, that it ever had address AA.NNN, or
that the owner of node AA.NNN calls his node XXXX.
(Sort of like your own phone book where you can write anything
 in it that you want - and you can get it as wrong as you want!)
"Usually", system managers update their local node databases
from some central place, so that changes tend to propagate
around the net. But that's not an automatic action.
(Sort of like getting a new phone book from the phone company now
 and then)

| | So the 10/20 Folks were much better than the VAX/VMS folks.

    I remember the cross training of the Tops folks to VMS and the hardware
    folks to the Vax architecture. It would seem that these same folks can
    make a transition to PC software/hardware.

    Just cutting large salaries, appears to be the thrust of this mode of
    operation.
