    Hello!

Bob Palmer held Breakfast meeting with selected employees on 2/23/93( I
may be wrong on date ). Could the person who attended share with us
what happened in the meeting. I am very curious to find out 1. Topics
discussed 2. How company is doing ?? 3. Bonus issue, if discussed,
    4. Future layoff, etc. Please share whatever you can.

    Thanks in advance.

I hope in these lean times that the breakfast reflected the state
of the company. Perhaps burnt toast and a rotten egg...a little skim
mild...no-fat pancakes and lean sausage...catered and served by
volunteers (like engineers on the "excess list").

He had them put a sign on one of our labs above the room where
he held the meetings. He wants us to keep the noise down as it
has interruped his meetings in the past. If he had of just invited
everyone down there wouldn't be anyone up there working to make
    noise!

Are you serious about the squelch request?

Yes, there is a list of quiet times listed just outside the lab area.
To be fair to us that work in the lab above the conference room
noise was also coming from the machine shop on the 5-1.

My,my...feeling a bit negative now,are we? You'd be the "life of the
party" at our annual shareholder meeting. You could do a "stand-up"
routine...that burnt toast and rotten egg thing would bring the house
    down.

    *really* be in deep doo-doo!

While access loads on HUMANE make it seem like everyone in the company
reads this conference that is not actually the case. Most likely is
that no one who was at the breakfast meeting reads this conference. Or
if they do they are shy.

There is a write up on, I assume, the breakfast that .0 asks about on
page 3 of "digital today." I got my copy in the cafeteria a few minutes
ago. I'm not about to type it all in. Especially as it didn't say much
I haven't heard time and again for the last several years. Well, except
for one thing. Bob Palmer saying "our chief obstacle appears to be our
own management." I've heard that a lot but this is the first time I've
heard it from a senior manager.

Who was there? "...people who report within two levels of the Senior
    Leadership Team."

Alfred,
Maybe we should change the title of this to "breakfast meeting between
Bob Palmer And Other Managers".....

This week I had the opportunity to attend a breakfast
sponsored by Bob Palmer. Each attendee was the invited guest
of a member of Bob's SLT (Senior Leadership Team). I
attended as John Klein's guest. The SLT was represented by
John Klein, Win Hindle, John Rando and Bill Strecker, in
addition to Bob. The format was a free forum Q & A. Bob
answered the majority of questions with insight from the
other SLT members, including Bill Strecker regarding current
and future relationships with Microsoft, Win Hindle regarding
our ethics as an organization plus past, present, and future
company value systems, and John Klein regarding the teaming
focus of the company's new business units.

Since Bob's inputs were far ranging, I'll simply summarize a
few key comments from my notes and memory:

       - Bob has yet to see an issue we face as a company that
won't be better addressed by our new business models

       - Our biggest obstacle to success is the resistance of
          our leadership

       - Work yet to be done on "strategic intent" efforts

       - SLT directly compensated on success against its
commitments individually and as a team

       - We need to reward salespeople for going "off the base"
          for new accounts

       - Customers are greatly dissatisfied with our order
          systems and other admin. systems

       - The value systems of a company define a company as much
          as values define an individual

       - Win Hindle was established to assure our behavior is
consistent with our words -- in Bob's view some
hypocrisy had crept in, at least in Greater Maynard --
one can be any place on the IQ scale but only one place
          on the integrity scale

       - Must regain respect of our employees

       - Previous administration pitted one group against the
other -- antithesis is Bob's view -- must have mutual
          respect

       - Bob sees a universal theme from our customers around
the globe wanting to see us succeed

       - Goal of four layers between the Business Unit Manager
          and the account

       - Most people's careers have been in a single "stovepipe"
at Digital -- going to the outside for some of our key
          positions helps bring fresh perspectives

       - "Alliances" don't tend to work well (approx. 80% fail)

       - Account Managers manage customer perceptions

       - We talk regularly about channels effectiveness needs
          but make little progress

       - Bob's desired footprint at digital is to do a
"competent job for our employees" and for our people to
proudly say "I work for Digital ... a GREAT company".
It is not to "be a hero" or "on a magazine cover". If
anyone is on a magazine cover it would hopefully be a
large number of team members versus any individual.

As always, Bob was articulate, confident, and exciting. It
was my pleasure to be part of this interaction. Hopefully,
you'll find these comments as positive as I did.

    Thanks and regards,

    Roger
