Thomas Cook Travel U.S.A. new U.S. travel services vendor

Thomas Cook Travel U.S.A. has been awarded the contract to service the
business and group travel needs of the U.S. employee base. The change
from American Express Travel is part of Digital's strategy to provide
quality cost-effective travel services to employees and focus on total
trip management. The change will be implemented over the next 90 days,
during the April time frame, and won't affect current travel plans or
the American Express corporate charge card program at this time.

With annual sales of $1.4 billion and 320 locations, the new vendor is
the third largest travel agency in the U.S. Thomas Cook Travel U.S.A.
currently provides travel services to Ford, Hewlett-Packard, AT&T and
Coopers & Lybrand. Digital and Ford will represent Thomas Cook's two
largest clients. The new agency has previously serviced Digital's
business and group travel needs including Circle of Excellence
    activity.

The U.S. based company operates under a licensing agreement with Thomas
Cook Group, a $10 billion company based in London which is owned by LTU
Group and Westdeutsche Landesbank. Thomas Cook Group is currently
servicing Digital in Europe and GIA locations.

The highlight of this new contract will be reduced travel service costs
through increased savings in productivity gains from a simplified
electronic reservation process. Features of the new travel program
    include:

o Technology tools for greater efficiencies, E-mail and electronic
flight schedule information to provide travel data directly to end
         users;

o Guarantee of lowest cost travel services including volume "bulk"
airline and hotel discount programs with major airlines and hotel
         chains;

      o  Customized business meeting and group travel management services;

o Quality travel management information reporting at the business
         operating level and

      o Employee vacation discount programs.

Please give this memo the widest distribution within your organization.

2312.1Can we now book via Compuserve?GUCCI::HERBAl is the *first* nameWed Jan 06 1993 20:484
Anyone know if this change will allow me to book my flights thru
Compuserve (OAG)? Cook is their agent. I don't mind paying the CIS
charges myself. There are some pretty powerful tools on Compuserve that
support a lot of planning for travel.

... and just completed a large SI Program in Atlanta to re-do the desk-
top and database infrastructure on VAX systems. The overall MIS base of AMEX
is IBM, true.

Cook/et.al. probably just "sweetened" the deal more than AMEX.

One of minor hot buttons, So I might as well say my piece.

Some years back, working in the Sydney, Australia head office. We had a
resident Amex Travel person. If I needed to travel, I could ring her
extension, give her the details, walk up three flights of stairs, and
the tickets would be ready before I reached her office. As a bonus,
she was available for booking personal vacation travel and so on.

Later they switched to an outside agency. (thomas cook) On at least
three occassions that I experienced, I Had to drive for 40 minutes in
traffic to pick up tickets (even though they had been given ample
    warning to deliver them).

My point is this. The tools exist now, for an efficient and effective
inhouse travel system, yet we hear continual complaints of por vendor
    service.

Even have a corporate on-line subscription to the OAG would be a step
    in the right direction...

I'm glad we finally dumped Amex. Nobody I know could ever explain why
it was that Digital INSISTED on paying higher rates to Amex when they
could be had for MUCH less elsewhere. I heard that there was a rebate,
but (at least in our case) it never seemed to make it back to the cost
center. At the same time, the Amex folks I dealt with insisted we were
getting great prices. This is for travel that was booked long in
advance and which was certain not to be cancelled. The conclusion I
came to was that we must be doing business with Amex for some sort of
political reasons. I just hope Cook can compete with other agencies
    this time around.

Well, we never used Amex here in Colorado Springs. We have on-site support
from a local agency, Guide Travel. I wonder of this change affects us too?
After all, we *are* a part of the U.S... :-)

Actually, why even bother with the Travel companies. If we had a decent
perchasing organization, we could have deals direct with airlines and
    hotels.

to wit, a friend of mine, ex-dec, makes a lot of business doing what
DEC didn't think it needed him to do. He travels all over Australia,
and flies to the U.S. 3-4 times per year. He stays at Hyatts because as
a Hyatt xxx-club member, having stayed there at least 20 days a year,
he gets a suite for the most basic rack room rate. Typically cheaper
    than most other similar hotels...

He flies exclusively with United. As a Premier Exec Frequent Flier,
they have now offered him a deal, where he gets his flights at around
60% off regular fares, with lots of upgrade coupons, priority booking
    etc.

Surely we can negotiate this sort of stuff at a corporate level...

RE: .8

Ah, but q my friend, you'd then be recieving a "benefit"
and where would this company be if you did that??

	God, I'm getting pessimistic! (sp?)
