2259.0. "Corporate-sponsored banquet?" by STAR::DIPIRRO () Thu Dec 03 1992 10:30

Last June/July, before the first major layoff to hit the Nashua
area, a consulting/placement firm, which has some unknown relationship
to Digital, setup an office in Nashua to help place displaced DEC
people. When people in this area were given the package, they were
pointed towards this agency for help in finding a new job.
I know one of the consultants who works for this agency. He was
telling me yesterday that Digital just held (and paid for) a banquet
for the people in this agency to celebrate them completing the
placement of all the DEC people. He was still in a "jovial" mood when
he told me about this, but I could also have sworn that he mentioned an
    open bar.
Knowing how these things work, I can envision as many DEC people
attending as non-DEC people. These things cost a few bucks. In fact,
maybe I lost one of my project engineers (whose work isn't going away)
to pay for it. Considering the timing of this banquet, I can't even
imagine how anyone in their right mind could spend the money to do such
a thing. It boggles the mind and reinforces the notion that while there
is great suffering going on, there is some elite group of people exempt
    from all the hardship.
So I'm wondering if anyone knows more about this who could put my
    mind at ease.

If the firm in question is Drake, Beam and Morin, this whole idea is a crock
as they have _not_ been successful in completing placement for "all the DEC
people". As a matter of fact, they haven't successfully placed _any_ of the
several ex-DECcies I know of whom avail themselves of their services.

In my opinion, if they actually did place all the ex-deccies in good
jobs, I would not mind rewarding them. Maybe they'll be doing the same
    for us.

From what I understand (having had the pleasure of informing
ex-employees about the DBM 'benefit'), is that DBM is not expected to place
employees. Rather, they are supposed to assist the employee in finding a
job by providing resume services, counseling, telephone answering
    support and the like.  They do not attempt to match employees to jobs;
they are not an employment agency.

This seems to be standard business practice in US industry. Probably
corporations want to keep an arms-length relationship with the ex-employee,
presumably to avoid being held accountable for an ex-employees inability
    to find a new job.

I spoke today with a former DECcie who has just found a job...Thru
DBM...And he knew several others who had been helped by them in the same
way....

I was glad to hear the news from him, I will be in need of their
services within the week...

2259.6you'd think they would have a network connection...EVETPU::MCCARTHYbut I kept rolling off the couchFri Dec 04 1992 06:506
I talk with someone who is "attending" DBM daily and the one thing she missed
greatly is they do not have any hooks into the internet. The misc.jobs,
ne.jobs, misc.jobs_offered etc posting are not available to her. Everyone
shows up with a newspaper.

that's too bad, considering how cheap and easy it is to get usenet groups
these days. I have a list of companies offering internet/usenet access in
the UK for around 10 a month, I expect it's even cheaper in the States.

Too bad DBM doesn't consult with a competent computer company. mwr
