2208.0. "Tell us about cutbacks in perqs" by NOTIME::SACKS (Gerald Sacks ZKO2-3/N30 DTN:381-2085) Mon Nov 09 1992 09:58

My wife and I went to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston yesterday.
I brought along by DEC badge because it entitles you to free admission.
The guard said "Digital? We're not giving free admission to Digital
employees anymore. They told us just this morning." As we turned
(with embarrassment) towards the long ticket line, he said "Well, I'll
let you in this time for old time's sake."

I understand that DEC has had to cut back on supporting non-profits,
and I'm not upset at the loss of this perq, but I think it should have
been announced to employees. I can't find anything on LIVEWIRE about it.

Just this morning it still lists that under VTX activities.
The least they could do is update our activity/discount list.
I wonder what else has been taken out......guess we'll find
out by making special trips and having to turn around if we
    didn't bring enough $

2208.3Communications-what's that?FLYSQD::MONTVILLEMon Nov 09 1992 13:0919

It would be real interesting to see just how much DEC supported these
organizations over the years. It would appear to me that Digital may
have "given" much more than taken. Now that we (company and people)
are facing tougher times maybe they could give something back.

Ths tee's me off that it was not announced. I would be real
embarrassed if I had taken my family on an outing and did come up
short on money and could not enter because we were not told.

It appears that throughout all these "transistions" that communications
are dropping. I am all for saving money and increasing my (and all of
our) likeness of keeping my our jobs. But we need to hear the messages
and directions from above alot clearer and for certain more timely.

    Just my opinion!

2208.4A joke, perhaps?ASABET::MACGILLIVARYMon Nov 09 1992 14:5410
    Just a thought...

Did it seem as though the peson at the door was kidding? Some people
do like to kid like that.

Seems stange that they would have just gotten the word from Digital
being a Sunday morning and all.

If it is true, I agree it should have been communicated before hand
    in Livewire.

Hey, two months ago they told me at the MFA that the
DEC-free-admission was history (so I parted with
a few pictures of George Washington). I didn't even
think to look it up in VTX when I was back in work.

2208.13Straight scoop on MFA, de Cordova, etc...?RDVAX::KALIKOWLe not justeWed Nov 11 1992 12:3613
... anyone know, or can state definitively? I took my family to the
Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum last weekend, and paid $ for admissions
and for the Sunday concert, but I expected to do that. I also packed
along my badge in case I could convince 'em to add the MFA to that
day's "vulture-for-culture" activities, but they declined. I woulda
been plenty surprised to have had to PAY at the MFA...

Not that I think it's wrong for DEC, in its present straits, to
maintain perks like these -- it's that I agree, we should be told.

Now that the issue's been raised, would someone who knows (forward it
to those in control so that they can) answer it, please? Tnx, Dan

2208.16Support for scholarship programs reducedCTHQ::DWESSELSThu Nov 12 1992 16:1841
digital Worldwide News LIVE WIRE

                   Support for scholarship programs reduced

Since 1982, Digital has supported three summer scholarship/enrichment
programs for employees' dependents: Phillips Academy, for international
students 15-17 years old; the Massachusetts Advanced Studies Program (MASP),
for Massachusetts high school juniors; and the St. Paul's School Advanced
Studies Program for New Hampshire high school juniors.

However, costs have continued to increase. Based on a review of the
programs, Digital will now pay half the cost of tuition, room and board to
scholarship recipients in all three programs.

In addition, the number of available Digital-sponsored scholarships within
each program has changed. Phillips Academy has allotted Digital 60
scholarships. MASP has allotted 25 scholarships. The St. Paul's program
will be limited to 12 scholarships.

To receive a Digital scholarship, the applicant must be a dependent of a
regular (full-time) Digital employee, who must be on active status at the
  time of dependent's acceptance.

In addition, the MASP and St. Paul programs require that high schools
nominate students for consideration. Applications for Phillips Academy must
be requested via electronic mail from Joanne Urgotis, Corporate Community
  Relations, @MSO or POWDML::URGOTIS.

Students are eligible to attend a specific program only once.

Scholarships covers tuition, room and board only. Books, lab fees,
transportation, and incidental expenses are the responsibility of the
  student.

All scholarship recipients are selected by the academic institutions based
on individual program criteria. Digital only identifies employees'
  dependents.

For more information on any of the programs, contact Joanne Urgotis,
Employee Scholarship Coordinator, at DTN 223-6083.
