BILL STRECKER TO HEAD ENGINEERING, DICK POULSEN EUROPE, AND BOBBY 
CHOONAVALA GIA

I'm pleased to announce three major appointments.  Bill Strecker 
will be responsible for development and implementation of our 
product strategy, as vice president of Engineering.  Digital vice 
president Dick Poulsen has been named president of Digital 
Europe.  And Bobby Choonavala, who has also been named a Digital 
vice president, is now president of Digital GIA.

In his new role, which is in addition to his current role as 
Chief Technology Officer, Bill reports to me and is a member of 
the Executive Committee.  Both Dick and Bobby report to Jack 
Smith, senior vice president of Operations.

ENGINEERING 

Bill is responsible for heading a new unified Engineering 
organization and delivering Engineering excellence.  I see that 
excellence in four areas:

1. Excellence in strategy:  developed in support of customer 
   needs, consistent with key technology trends, and communicated 
   clearly to our employees and customers.
2. Excellence in execution:  delivering world-class products 
   efficiently and on time.
3. Excellence in environment:  providing an organization in which 
   world-class engineers want to work.
4. Excellence in results:  providing products at a cost that 
   enables our customer-focused business units to achieve their 
   business results.

He will be responsible for hardware, software, networking, 
systems engineering and research.  I have asked Bill to work with 
the various Engineering vice presidents to define and implement 
the new Engineering organization, which he will announce later.

Bill joined Digital in 1972 and was a leader in defining and 
implementing our VAX, VMS, VAXcluster and LAN products and 
strategies.  He was named vice president in 1984.  Bill received 
B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from Carnegie Mellon University in 
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  He holds 14 U.S. patents and is a 
member of the National Academy of Engineering.

EUROPEAN OPERATIONS

Dick Poulsen will lead our European organization, headquartered 
in Geneva. He has been Digital vice president, president of 
Digital GIA since 1985, and has extensive experience in dealing 
with multi-national customers and managing a multi-national 
organization.  He will bring leadership to Europe, which is a 
major segment of our business and had FY92 revenues of $6.75 
billion.   

Dick joined Digital in 1968 as Canadian Customer Services 
manager.  He was promoted to mid-Atlantic Customer Services 
manager in 1970, and to European Customer Services manager in 
1973.  He initiated Digital's Customer Services Manufacturing, 
and in 1977 became Customer Services Manufacturing manager at its 
first plant, located in Salem, New Hampshire.  He was named 
Corporate Customer Services manager in 1979 and vice president, 
Customer Services in 1981.  He received his diploma in electronic 
technology in 1956 from Ryerson Institute of Technology in 
Toronto, Canada, and is a 1973 graduate of the Program for 
Executives at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, 
Pennsylvania.

GIA OPERATIONS

Having managed in both Europe and Asia, Bobby Choonavala is 
keenly aware of the needs of multi-national customers and the 
challenges of doing business on a global scale.  Our GIA 
operation had FY92 revenues of $2.03 billion and includes 
conducting business in 40 countries.

Bobby has been with Digital for 26 years.  He headed our Asia 
region (previously known as the Far East region) since 1985. 
Before that assignment, he served as international sales manager 
for our European operation, after five years as the European 
sales manager.  Bobby joined Digital in 1966 as a project 
engineer in Maynard, Massachusetts, and two years later became 
the first manager of the company's Dutch subsidiary. He then 
served as a district manager in Europe before becoming manager of 
the former southwest region in Europe from 1973 to 1978.  He 
holds a B.S. degree in physics from Bombay University in India 
and an M.S. degree in electronics engineering from the 
Technischer Hochschule in Germany.

	I hear that both the European and GIA VP's are competant, bottom line numbers ( $$$$) people. Maybe they will help the company establish a successful 'present' state, while Strecker et al, work for future goals.

	When my account had some problems in the GIA geography I called on Dick Poulsen for assistance. He flew to California to meet with his counterpart and conducted himself with a high degree of credibility and professionalism. He left with several action items which he followed up on immediately on his return east. He responded to me and he responded to my customer. We were both impressed. One thing that surprised me was that he came here alone. I expected him to have several of his entourage with him but he was a one man show. I personally think this is GIA's loss and Eurpoe's gain.

	Having worked in GIA for some years my impression of Poulson is exactly the opposite. AS far as I'm concerned he's a typical Digital VP hack. Falotti, on the other hand, had a vision. You don't have to agree with visionaries but you have to respect their achievements. Falotti made things happen for Europe. Poulson presided over GIA's decline.

I know that, in conversations with colleagues recently, none of use even considered Strecker a likely candidate for Engineering VP. Bob

	Just to clarify the situation ;^). I was a female manager too. I changed to international consultancy on my own free will. As a consultant I have a good change to make observations. I still don't see women very often in management positions whatever is the reason. --Ritva

	I'm an IT consultant, and part of a management team, I am no longer a manger of people, but manage an area of business, and also deliver IT consultancy in that area. The others in the management team manage people as well as an area of the business and delivery, 3 are female, two are male, and our manager is female. So, of a management team of 7, 5 are female and 2 are male. I don't think that this is the norm, however in my time in Digital, it's not that rare either. End of rathole, back to normal service. 	This list might be a little out of date, but I think it is accurate enough to show the situation at the top in Europe. According to the list, there are 34 functional and country managers in Europe, all men. Just FYI.
