Lemme get this straight, you have a problem with people saying
"goodbye" in a notes conference? Why?

Not "a notes conference" , it's "this notes conference". I didn't say "in
notes", I said "in here". Can't they get their own notes conference?
Why? Because I find it rather boring and depressing. In any case, isn't
a notice of "goodbye" a general announcement?
Think about the answer to that before you press <return>

Friday
After almost ten years, Friday October 16, 1992 will be my last day at
Digital; my leaving is voluntary. In looking back, working here
positively contributed to my personal and professional growth. In each
experience I learned something valuable, though you might have had
trouble convincing me of the benefits at the time.
The most important thing here for me has been our wonderful system of
"Digital contacts". (That includes almost everybody in the company,
doesn't it?) You know those people: they are the ones, located half
way, more or less, across the length of the net. They know how to
order something, answer an unanswerable question, direct you to a group
that is hiring, squabble with, question, nurture, and guide you, and,
most importantly, make the extra effort to do something that was not
required that made working here unique. (I would have used the word
special, but did not want "Saturday Night Live's" "Church Lady" to bop
me.)
Anyway, it has been fun.
Good bye and good luck.
Thank you.

2116.12 | After 25 years and giving my 2 arms I'm zapped | DANGER::FORTMILLER | Ed Fortmiller, BXB2-2, 293-5076 | Fri Nov 06 1992 12:37 | 78 |
| [ I just receive a call from Sue Andrews in Corporate Personnel saying
my request for an extension was denied. 6-Nov-92]
Permission is hereby granted to forward this to anyone either inside
or outside of Digital or to post it in any conference.
Ed Fortmiller
22 October 1992
Dear Mr. Palmer,
This evening I was expecting to celebrate my 25-year Anniversary with
Digital Equipment Corporation. However, hours before the event I was
told by my supervisor that on November 2, 1992 I'll be formally
notified that my employment at Digital is being terminated and that I
will be TFSO'd unless I can quickly locate another position. With a
lot of reqs now frozen this task will be extremely difficult.
I am a Principal Software Engineer. About 3-1/2 years ago I developed
a repetitive stress injury in both arms from overuse of the keyboard.
The injury progressed to the point where the muscle was deteriorating
and my Neurologist restricted my use of the computer keyboard.
Digital then generously purchased a DragonDicate voice-input system at
a cost of $13,577 in order to allow me to continue to work. My arms
and fingers have improved, but I'm still in pain and the threat of
risky nerve surgery hangs over my head.
With this complication, I will not be employable as a software
engineer outside of Digital. Given the current economic climate and
job market, no prospective employer is likely to purchase a
voice-input system in order to hire me when other qualified applicants
do not require such expensive hardware in order to do the job.
During these past 25 years I have tried to give my best to Digital.
At times this has meant working long hours, nights, Sundays, holidays
and delaying vacations. This has meant working for the last 3-1/2
years with pain in one, and sometimes both of my arms and fingers. In
addition this injury has caused a hardship on my family. Now the
thanks that I get for doing all this is being told that I'm no longer
needed. Does Digital have any compassion for an injured employee?
It is my wish to continue to be a dedicated, loyal Digital employee.
I'm writing in the hope that due to the occupation induced nature of
my medical condition, some additional consideration will be
forthcoming. An immediate cancellation of the November 2 deadline is
requested so that I can continue to search for a new position within
Digital.
Due to these unusual circumstances, I'm sure you'll understand my
requesting a reply before my last day on November 2, 1992.
Sincerely,
Ed Fortmiller

2116.13 | "Do the right thing" retired | TOMK::KRUPINSKI | A dark morning in America | Fri Nov 06 1992 15:21 | 15 |
| "Do the Right Thing" was retired from Digital Equipment Corporation
today. One of the earliest employees, it had served the company
faithfully for many years. For the past several years, it had been
on a long-term leave of absence.
Many credit "Do the Right Thing" for much of DEC's success during
the 60's, 70's and early 80's. Always flexible, "Do the Right Thing"
managed to adapt to whatever situation it was presented with.
Longtime employees familiar with "Do the Right Thing" lamented that
it would no longer be a part of the company culture, although many
noted that they would soon be joining it in retirement.
"Do the Right Thing" has been replaced at Digital by "Cover Your Ass",
which has been with the company and involved with many corporate
projects since the late 1980's.

| Ed,
I have much sympathy. You're not alone in your sadness, as Tom
aptly illustrated.
Please don't get too depressed. DIGITAL is and was only an
employer. You, your family and friends are MUCH more important.
Good luck - but spare some for us, too.
Thanks
Andy
