2100.0. "Baltic states opportunity?" by R2ME2::CMURRAY (Chuck Murray) Mon Sep 14 1992 09:21
I don't know of a particular person or office I should direct this to,
and it's of general interest and may represent a business opportunity
for Digital.
Two computer scientists from Lithuania, who will be the U.S. soon, sent
mail to a discussion group ("Interpersonal Computing and Technology" -
IPCT-L) asking if any American universities were interested in sponsoring
visits so they could give talks. I sent them mail saying I couldn't speak
for a university, but would like to attend any talks they gave in the
Boston area. In the course of e-mail exchanges between myself and
Dr.Algirdas Pakstas, one of the computer scientists, he mentioned the
possibility of Digital sponsoring a visit or talk while they were in the U.S.
Below are excerpts from their original mailing and some messages from
Dr. Pakstas to me. I believe this may represent a significant business
opportunity for Digital, as well as an educational opportunity for any
Digital employees who attend the talk(s). If anyone else agrees (i.e.,
anyone with the authority to extend an invitation), or if you need
further information, please contact Dr. Pakstas directly.

Subj: Lectures on Computer Technologies and Networking in Baltic
From: [email protected]
Dear Colleagues,
Let us we will introduce ourselvs. We are computer scientists from
Vilnius, Lithuania (temporary staying in Trondheim, Norway). We both
are working in the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the
Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. Main research topics are software
engineening for distributed computer systems, methods and tools for
development of distributed software configurations, networking, formal
methods, simulation of message passing systems.
We are going to visit USA in September-October, 1992 for conference.
We also are interested to visit american Universities and give some
lectures about our research results and more general lectures about
Computer Technologies and Networking in Baltic Countries.
Please, let us know if your organizations are interested in such
subjects and can be partial sponsors for our visit at least inside USA
(unfortunately, our host institute in Norway can't to provide full
funding). Our CVs and abstracts of possible lectures are available on
request.
Please, reply ASAP by e-mail or by FAX. Our address:

(From one message from Dr. Pakstas to me:)
Dear Chuck,
At the moment I have no any offers from Universities near Boston,
Massachusetts. :-( Maybe DEC could be primary interested organization?
Lecture about Computing Technologies have special part about producing
PDP-11/VAX-11 clones in Lithuania :-).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
(From other messages from Dr. Pakstas to me:)
[Someone at DEC -- no name mentioned in the message -- said he] will talk
to colleagues at Digital about [a visit to headquarters in Maynard].
So, maybe they will sponsor us and, as result, maybe we could to meet
there. Anyway, it could be around 30.09.92-02.10.92...

| Re .1 - .3: Thanks for the suggestions. As it turns out, I've received
several e-mail messages and a phone call from people within Digital who
are in a position to pursue this matter. I've also gotten mail from
Dr. Pakstas in which he said that someone from Digital had called him.
So, I'll "step aside" now and let the appropriate people take it from
here. (Of course, if there's anything further I can do to help, just
let me know.)

2100.5 | Lecture at Boston U at 3:30 PM today | R2ME2::CMURRAY | Chuck Murray | Thu Oct 01 1992 12:18 | 13 |
| I just got this information: Dr. Pakstas will be giving a lecture
at Boston University this afternoon (Thurs) at 3:30.
The talk will be in a classroom (the Gettys Language Lab -- room 533?) in
the BU School of Management building at 585 Commonwealth Avenue (near
Kenmore Square - nearest MBTA stop probably isn't Kenmore; I think there's
a stop near the building). I don't know the lecture topic (got my info via
voice mail). It's apparently a lecture for a BU class, but "outsiders" are
welcome.
Sorry about the late notice. I don't know of any other lecture plans, in
Boston or elsewhere; but if you're interested, you could send me mail
and I'll try to find out.

2100.6 | "Trip report" available | R2ME2::CMURRAY | Chuck Murray | Sun Oct 04 1992 11:03 | 11 |
| I attended the talk mentioned in .5. As it turned out, there were two
speakers: Dr. Pakstas, plus someone from the World Bank who talked about
a pilot project to provide a simple interface for accessing Internet
resources.
My "trip report" is in:
CLT::CLT$TEMP:BU_TRIP_REPORT.TXT
(I don't know how long the file will be available, so copy it soon if
you're interested.)
