| As part of an engineering group which was responsibile for the creation
of some of the tools in use at the CMS, I'd be curious to know what's
to become of them (the tools).

| Since the AMC's (I think) are worrying about getting people onto Alpha,
does the dissolution of the CMS mean that we've decided that getting
people onto VAX is no longer a desireable goal?
Gosh! Sounds like the late 70's all over again.

PS. I didn't address my concerns as suggested in .0 because I haven't one
of those account critters or whatever, and I have no connection with Don
Z, either. I'm just curious.

| re .0:
This is a typical dreadful decision, no doubt taken on the basis
that the Center for Migration Services has little visible means of
support.
But that fact merely reflects that in the past we have sensibly
avoided "unnecessary" measurement, preferring to devote our
energies to doing business.
As a Software Engineering marketing manager, I often refer to the
notes conference TYFYS::CONVERSION, and I have a note of the hotline
number. Several times a month, I point field people to it. I know
that this is the one place in the corporation worldwide where I
can rely on getting the definitive answer to "can I port X to Y,
and if so how?"
In today's market, this capability is more important than ever.
This decision could never have been taken on the basis of an
informed rational business judgment. It looks more like superficial,
accounting-driven panic.

SUBJECT: The CMS is out of business
At the request of our management in the Cross Industries EIC, the
CMS has stopped taking on any new business. We have been instructed
to refer all requests for software conversion/migration assistance
to Larry Pelavin @MKO (SOLVIT::PELAVIN) at dtn 264-6925.
It is our understanding that the entire CMS team will be TFSO'd on
Monday, August 31. We have not yet been given a plan for transition
of existing projects, but we will continue to work the issue and
will notify affected account teams as soon as we know anything.
If any of you find you have a need in the future for the kind of
talent that has been available via the CMS, but on a contract basis,
I'll be keeping track of the team for a while. You can reach me at
my home number, 719-687-3784, after next week.
Best of luck to you all,

Digital Services is changing the way it deals with Migration
requests but is not changing its commitment to Account Teams
requiring Migration assistance.
1. Migration services continue to be available and are
being delivered at other Digital locations; Please
call 800-832-6277 for further assistance.
2. ALL EXISTING CONTRACTS AND COMMITMENTS ARE BEING
HONORED. Please call 800-832-6277 for further
assistance.
3. All migrations requested by account teams will be
considered but resource scarcity and business
considerations may make some migrations more
difficult for us to respond to than others. Please
call 800-832-6277 for further assistance.
4. Please bear with us as we accomplish a difficult
transition. We appreciate that changes in the way
things have always been done is itself stressful and
we are doing what we can to be responsive.
