DIGITAL TO BUILD PCS IN IRELAND

Digital Equipment looks likely to start building its own PCs at its
plant in Galway within a year. At the moment Digital badges PCs
made by Intel and Olivetti for the European market. However since
February, it has designed and built its own machines at its Taiwan
plant for the South East Asian and American market. British component
suppliers say they are hoping to sell to Digital in Ireland soon. A
Digital spokesman refused to confirm any plans to build PCs in Ireland.

Could be just modules, especially since this rumour was started by a
    component vendor !

Given the normal NPSU cycle time in mfg I would expect you to know
about plans to build PCs, if this was intended to happen in 1 year.

As the article does not list any solid confirmation from a digital
spokeperson then I would say this is pure speculation !!

From the June 17 issue of `Electronics Weekly'
----------------------------------------------

America's second largest computer maker, Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC),
looks likely to start building its own PCs at its Galway plant in Ireland
within a year.

This comes hot on the heels of DECs recent move to make its own PCs in Taiwan
to service US and Far East customers. At the moment, DEC badges PCs made by
Intel and Olivetti for the European market. However since Febraury, it has
designed and built its own machines at its Taiwan plant for the South East
Asian and American markets, and components suppliers in Britian are expecting
to be able to sell to Ireland in the future.

"There is development work going on in Scotland," one supplier told EW, "and
we have been talking to purchasing people there. We are expecting manufacture
to take place in Ireland, but not for about a year." An Irish distributor told
EW that he was hoping to sell components for PCs to DEC Galway in the near
future.

A DEC spokesman refused to confirm any plans to build PCs in Ireland. However,
he said: "It is our policy to source our machines locally, but if we can build
at our own facilities at the right price, we will do so. If that situation
occurred in Europe there is no reason why we shouldn't do it."

He insisted that existing arrangements with Olivetti and Intel would remain
in place, and pointed out that Tandy also supplies DEC with PCs for the American
market despite DECs move to manufacturing in Taiwan.

PCs and related products and software accounted for $1.25bn in revenue for DEC
in calender 1991, according to the spokesman. He also said that DEC wants to
increase its share of the UK PC market from about one per cent in 1991 to five
per cent by 1993.
