1931.0. "??John Sims leaving DEC??" by USCTR1::JHERNBERG () Mon Jun 08 1992 16:36

Disclaimer: This is rumor; I am asking for clarification NOT
confirming or verifying the truth of the following.

Please excuse this request as it is to once again confirm or deny
yet another rumor but I think it is too important to ignore and I
don't think it would come by official channels in the near future.

I have just heard that John Sims will be leaving the company.
According to said rumor there was reluctance to accept blame for
    the company's personnel situation.

    Can anyone add anything?

    Thank you.

Uh...exactly what is the company's personnel situation?
Is there some new scandal which has yet to surface, or is this
simply in reference to the current state of personnel?

You forgot to add "And don't forget to tell us how you make out with your
request!"

    Kimberley,

Would that I could do as you suggested; an honest and straight-
forward solution to a situation that may eventually impact upon
my employment at DEC. However, I have cause to believe through
pervious experience with Mr. Sims (indirectly) and the executive
level of Personnel that honesty and forthrightness is not how my
    request would be dealt with.

.3 is a bit more jaded than I am but I certainly know what he
means. With all do respect, I would go to Personnel with a
serious work related situation when Hades reaches an atmospheric
temperature sufficient to cause H2O to pass from a liquid to a
    solid state.

Perhaps somebody is upset that he spent $25K of the companies money
interfering in the DCU election. Only joking...

I just had a brief but very pleasant meeting with John Sims. He is
not leaving to go anywhere........... so please take it upon yourselves
to help put an end to the rumor mill.

John is a real person who gave me a straight forward answer.

"No, I am not going anywhere!"

However, John is a might bit busy to reply to rumors and
his office asked that I post this note.

From LIVEWIRE

John Sims to retire (30-Jul) Date: 30-Jul-1993

                           John Sims to retire

John Sims has announced his retirement from his position as Vice
  President, Strategic Resources.

"My 19 years with Digital have been extraordinarily exciting and
rewarding," John said. "Digital has set the standard for employee-based
values, ethics, valuing diversity and corporate citizenship. Many companies
in the U.S. have measured themselves against this standard. The company has
ridden the crest of the wave of success, fallen on difficult times, and has
made remarkable progress in transforming and revitalizing itself.

"It has been a privilege to work as a member of the senior management
team and to have had the opportunity to develop programs across a wide range
of corporate functions, including Personnel, Administration, Environmental
Health and Safety, and Information Management and Technology. I want to thank
  Digital for such an opportunity."

Over the last several months, John has been actively involved in
helping Digital to shape and implement a value-based strategy for entering
the South Africa market. He worked with the U.S. Government government, the
South African government, the African National Congress, and other factions
there to help Digital enter South Africa more smoothly than any other major
  corporation.

John joined Digital in 1974 as corporate manager of Equal Employment
Opportunity and Affirmative Action. Within a year he was promoted to
director of Manufacturing Personnel. In 1981 he became Corporate Staff
Manager, and in 1984, Vice President of Personnel. He was appointed to the
Executive Committee in 1986, and elected Vice President of Strategic
Resources in 1987. A year later, John was recognized by "Black Enterprise"
magazine as one of the 25 most influential African-American executives in
the United States. John has been a member of the Senior Leadership Team and
an executive partner to six major customers.

Following his retirement on August 6, John plans to become a
consultant, advising corporations on their investment strategies throughout
the continent of Africa. He also plans to continue support of the Freedom
House and the Stratford-funded Project REACH (Road to Educational
ACHievement) where he currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors.
John will also continue to support Digital as a consultant in its
implementation of its southern African strategy and related government
  functions.

Robert B. Palmer, Digital's president and CEO commented, "John has
made many contributions to the growth of Digital and its culture, most
recently to our entry into business in South Africa. We wish him well in his
retirement from Digital, and success in his new undertaking."

I seriously doubt it. Back on 9-JUN-1992 I'm sure he really DIDN'T have any
plans to retire. The company has changed a lot during the intervening 14
months...
