    I am trying to donate some VT100's to my local library and am
    having a hard time because nobody around here has done this
    sort of thing. I would appreciate aid or advice.

	I remember a trip up to Los Alamos about two years ago. As we passed by one pickup in the parking lot (Dept. of Energy vehicle), I noticed that it was full of old VT100 carcasses and keyboards... Sad......

	You have to pass it through something like the "Property Disposal Center" which was in Northboro. They would send you appropriate paperwork with a No Charge Shipping Authorization to get it out of the building as a donation. I think they got a tax write-off for donations. Try there or the Property Disposition Center in Contoocook, NH DTN 267-2257. Schools and libraries love to get this stuff. Sharon

	re: .3 Interesting. I wonder when the policy changed. Last I knew (about 3 years ago, I think), a memo came down from the Kingdom in the North stating that donation of used equipment was now strictly forbidden. It had to be sent to Salvage, where it would be sold as scrap metal (providing that no one picked it off DIAL, that is). It would be interesting to find out when this policy was changed. -- Russ

	I think Russ is right in .5. I too recall discussion of this topic a while back. I believe the prohibition against donating old equipment is based on the grief and bad "public relations" that can result (and maybe have resulted?). That is, if we give away technology that is outdated and more likely to break down than new stuff, and if we don't provide free service coverage, we're likely to end up with dissatisfied users who associate DEC with obsolete, unreliable technology. And rather than being seen as a benefactor of worthy causes, the company risks being viewed as a tightwad "too cheap" to donate modern technology and merely looking for a tax write-off for giving away "junk." Sort of a "heads-you-lose, tails-you-lose" proposition.

	Donations are being made according to current policy. A copy of them, which I mailed to the base noter, can be found on VTX at WASTE. Recollections of stopping the practice are correct. Now it's started again.
