| It makes sense...falls right into the "backwards" pattern we have used
to implement downsizing (Gad, I hate that word) so far. Other
companies used early retirements and voluntary programs FIRST. Digital
uses them last, after having forced out hundreds and perhaps thousands
of highly qualified people who really wanted to stay.

Let's "Downsize" the clowns who abused their expenses (note 1822)

| The problem is I think there are some very high level "clowns"
involved. Many of the expenses were so high that only a high
level manager could have signed for them. Wanna bet they are
still here?

| NOW PEOPLE LET'S GET IT RIGHT!!!!!!!
It's not Downsizing, its RIGHTSIZING! RIGHTSIZING! RIGHTSIZING!
If nothing else, let's at least use the correct euphemism.

| What voluntary program???
Being in the field and the US I am not aware of there ever being any
voluntary TFSO's. It's a good thing to because I am positive we would
lose our best people. REAL quick. Yet I am equally dismayed by the fact
that the people who decide the layoffs are completely out of touch with
what are the real needs.

the original tfso (and the second one, i think) was totally
voluntary, but was limited to certain departments. They basically
said, one one in this department want to take the package?
But if you weren't in the right department, it wasn't offered.
I think the current rumor is a voluntary package for anyone, in
any department. A Payment to leave, basically.
i have no idea if the rumor is true, but that's the rumor i heard.

| RE: .10 A blanket "FALSE!!!" doesn't give much information. FWIW,
the story in .9 is the way it was explained to me. And not just by
management but by a number of friends who got TFSO'd. While there
may have been pressure in some groups, although instructions to
managers was to avoid pressure, I know a number of people who happily
volunteered.

| Well, several months back, there was a memo detailing notes from a KO meeting
where two rumors were given fuel:
early retirement (this has indeed come to pass)
voluntary across the board severance (what this string is discussing)
Given the history of rumors at Digital, where there's smoke there is usually
fire. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the voluntary program see the light
of day.

1823.13 | The latest . . . | GLDOA::LAETZ | | Thu Apr 02 1992 10:35 | 6 |
| The latest here . . . .
the severance will not include sales.
Two versions on when . . . June because they need to take the write-off
in this fiscal year, but I find that difficult to believe since we will
be losing some many valuable retirees.
The other version, first part of July.

1823.16 | write off | CSC32::K_BOUCHARD | Ken Bouchard CXO3-2 | Tue Apr 07 1992 14:42 | 4 |
| If you mean "write off" this probably refers to DEC being able to
deduct the costs of the SERP in this fiscal year which ends June 30.
