1734.1 | Consult the Corporate Identity Manual | EMDS::ROSINSKI | | Wed Jan 22 1992 08:50 | 33 |
| One point of clarification here on the "correct logo." This comes from
a presentation given by someone from the Corporate Identity Committee
I attended.
Blue on white is not the "standard logo," ie., registered trademark.
The registered trademark is a unique type face which is registered with
the federal government. These letters are surrounded by the familiar
boxes. The entire logo is intended to appear as a stencil, so if the
logo is printed on white paper, the boxes would be blue with white
lettering showing through, or gray with white lettering showing through,
or whatever with white lettering showing through. If the logo is
printed on say a black background, the black color must show through as
the color of the lettering, so you would have to have say gray boxes.
I'm not sure if there are restrictions on the allowable colors for the
boxes.
Now I'm sure you're thinking that you have seen many cases where this
isn't the way it's been done. You'd be correct. This is Digital after
all. Once a corporate policy is put into place, in this case the
Corporate Identity Manual, everyone freely chooses to go off and do
whatever they want anyway. This causes us great legal problems stemming
from misuse of our registered trademark, and could result in our losing
it.
The Corporate Identity Committee is on a campaign to clean up the
abuses. To that end, they have set up a Corporate Identity notesfile.
I don't recal the node, but you should be able to find it in VTX.
There is a copy of the Corporate Identity Manual in there, and some
information on Logo files. Hope this helps.
Happy Trails...

1734.2 | How about this? | RANGER::PEASLEE | | Wed Jan 22 1992 08:59 | 13 |
| Just a suggestion - you may want to order part number PCP1C-XA.
It is a leather bag for the DECpc 320P. It is a briefcase style
with room for the base unit, AC Adapter, extra batteries, pointing
device, floppies etc.
It is black leather and has the Digital logo embossed on it.
Approximate dimensions are 17 x 13 x 2". it is padded and soft-sided.
IMHO it is very classy looking and reflects a positive Digital
image.
(I may be bias).

1734.3 | Less Hassle | CALS::DIMANCESCO | | Wed Jan 22 1992 09:18 | 16 |
| Re. .1 concerning corporate standards and legal issues
I am all for a corporate standard and would support it. But I am concerned
that these things get overdone. Large corporations develop this
huge infrastructure of process people that are there to protect
the corporation. And staffs of lawyers scare the daylights out of
everyone.
A by-the-way for all the work that the corporate people have done
designing THE logo, and writing procedures, processes and rules about
its use, I am willing to bet that you can probably find over a
100 different of variations of the logo throughout Digital.
I hope that the guy who wants to put a logo on his carrying case
can do so as quickly as possible, as easily as possible, without
hassles, restrictions, approvals, etc.

| The guy wants to sew a patch on his bag fer christs sakes!
Why the hell should it matter what whether he uses the correct logo
or not? After all, he bought it, so it is *his* bag now and he
should be able to sew a picture of Mao on their if he wants to.
Besides, his bag is *not* an official DEC product, his bag
is a Tandy product. In fact, by following the advice in here
and putting the exact digital logo on his bag, he might even get
DEC in legal trouble for false advertising or something! What if
Tandy decided to sue DEC because it appeared we were pawning their
bag off as our own!
Lighten up people! It's a personal possesion. He's looking
for a way to do some subtle advertising for DEC - a little like
slapping a "digital" bumper sticker on your car (which works as
long as the car is attractive). Let him do whatever he wants,
or we are probably all liable.

| Re .0:
If you cannot find a suitable carrying case or patch, you might
consider having someone make a patch for you. I believe that trophy
and/or some sporting goods shops do (or did) this kind of thing for
amateur sports teams and whatnot; perhaps the cost would not be
prohibitive.

1734.7 | Take scissors in hand and remove the unwanted logo! | SKNNER::SKINNER | I'm doing my EARS | Wed Jan 22 1992 13:00 | 7 |
| In the meantime, cut the threads that hold the TANDY logo "patch" and remove it.
You'll have a naked bag, but at least it won't say something you don't want it
to.
When you find the patch you want, sew it on!

| This note is really here just as a metaphor for what's wrong
with DEC, right?
A guy has a reasonable simple idea which has good potential
payback at minimal risk, and he gets "processed" to death.

1734.9 | Live Free or Die, right? | EMDS::ROSINSKI | | Wed Jan 22 1992 16:12 | 24 |
| The originator of the note asked for information about the logo. I
gave him what information I had personally, and pointed him to an
authoritative source for further information. I'm dismayed to see
that is being construed as representative of what is wrong with
Digital today.
Yes, there are hundreds of examples around the corporation of logo's
which do not properly represent the registered trademark. That
illustrates that the problem exists, not justifies that it should be
perpetuated. The reason for this is that many people find the logo
boring, and wish to dress it up. They may have a valid point, but that
was not the subject of this note, and most assuredly would result in a
major rathole.
Some good points have been made. It is his bag now to do with as he
pleases. The only potential for problem, as highlighted by a previous
reply is if he is seen as being a representative of the corporation,
misrepresenting our logo or someone else's product (the Tandy bag).
I still hope my replies help, not hinder Chris's efforts.
Happy Trails...
