1727.0. "HELP!!! IBM-->ULTRIX " by HAAG::HAAG (Dreamin' on WY high country) Thu Jan 16 1992 16:13

This is my last gasp. Can anyone help? we are running out of time.

We need a plan to get 200 programmers (currently writing code on an IBM
ES9000 mainframe using CICS and COBOL) productive and operational in a
UNIX/C environment. Preferably this plan will have been actually used
in some other customer site for their transition from an IBM mainframe
environment to a distributed UNIX/C environment. This does not have to
be an extensive implementation plan. Just a general overview would do.
This is for the Executive VP level type audiance.

Can someone point me in the direction of ULTRIX and/or IBM competitive
or marketing people who may have been involved in something like this?
We have to address questions on this topic at a customer next Wend. and
a lot rides on our answers.

I forwarded your request to Gail Grant (DECWRL::GRANT), who handles the
ULTRIX focus for the Customer Advisory Boards. Good luck.

This seems pretty simple (not in three days, but I assume you didn't start
on this yesterday)

What stops you from identifying the tools and processes required to function
in a UNIX/C environment, seeing which of those can be reasonably taken on by
IBM/CICS/COBOL people and then working with Ed. Services to put a plan together
to address the difference?

Perhaps thats all you gotta tell the execs... "Mr. VP, we have the following
methodology and we will work against this schedule to get to point A."

Perhaps I miss some subtle difficulty???

Unfortuneately we have only three days. The VP requested a meeting to
specifically discuss this issue. We already mentioned the Ed services
specialized training, plus a variety of other measures. He wants to see
a plan. Complete with tools and perhaps success stories from elsewhere.

    However,

I have recieved over 2 dozen responses to this note. Several of them,
when bundled together will, I think, get us over the hump. Many thanks
to all of you who have called and sent mail. For all the gloom and doom
running around this company these days it is refreshing to know that
when your butt is in a corner you can scream for help and people will
respond with a genuine effort to help.

    Thanks, one and all.

God willing, and the creeks don't rise, we may get the company and
ourselves out of this mess yet.

    Rgds,

    Gene.
