1567.0. "DEC sponsored tutors ???" by CNTROL::DGAUTHIER () Mon Aug 19 1991 00:56

    Hi:

I'm interested in volunteering as a tutor for high school students and
was wondering if DEC has any community involvement programs in place
that might help me out in this regard. I am thinking along the lines
of tutoring in math and/or science and am more interested in the more
needy areas of the inner city.

Any leads (inside or outside of DEC) would be appreciated.

    Thanks
    Dave

I think the US menu of VTX LIVEWIRE has some special selection about
community volunteer opportunities. You might want to check there.
(I remember seeing some announcement about this info, but it was mostly
New England based, so I didn't spend much time looking at it)

There's quite a lot of such activity here in Colorado Springs, but I doubt that
would help you :-)

Perhaps it would help if you said what geographic area you're located in...

I live and work in eastern Massachusetts. I was thinking of tutoring
    in the greater Boston area.

Call Ann Hurd, Massachusetts Community Relations Manager at DTN
296-4269. They were looking for some good people to teach Math and
Science. There were also a couple of locations to choose from (Boston,
    Worcester, etc.)

    Hope that helps!

Dave,

You may want to add an entry to your NOTES file.

It is:           CHIPS::VOLUNTEER

I am sure you can get some leads from that conference.

Good luck,

Kevin

Thank you Kevin for the pointer.

Dave I'm assuming your in SCO by your node name. The group that created
and maintains the CHIPS Volunteers notesfile is also from SCO in the Hudson
facility.

People you may want to contact are Sheila Coleman, or Will Sherman they
already have contacts with outside organizations they could point you in
the right direction.

Good luck.

I'm loctated in Great Lakes, FHO facility in Novi MI (outside of
Detroit) where we have a group that tutors twice a month on Saturdays
    throughout the year.

Our Coordinator's name is Sharon Simpson, DTN 471-5296. She recruits
employees to prticipate in the program. She also has adtl. information
on similar programs in the Eastern States. She has given permission to
have her name and number posted as a resource.

    Good Luck!
