It seems to me that one of the biggest complaints in the corporation is the lack of Upper Management direction. To that end, I recently received via mail a copy of 'Digital Big Picture'. I have been in contact both with the authors and with this conference moderator, and have agreed to enter this as an entry for folks to get more info.. This is the preface of the document. -------------------------------------------------------- PREFACE OBJECTIVE "The Big Picture" has been developed in order to provide Digital Management with a tool for understanding and communicating the long term direction, functional relationships, areas of excellence and needs of Digital. POSITIONING The "Big Picture" was designed to enhance the reader's understanding of some basic facts and dimensions of Digital Equipment Corporation as a World Class company. Only by viewing our corporation's capabilities in terms of its relationships and integration with members of the entire Digital "Enterprise" (Cross-functionally with sales, marketing, engineering, etc. and with our customers, suppliers, governments, universities, etc.) can a more realistic understanding of the corporation be developed. It needs to be noted that with the rapid changes taking place within the corporation, that some segments of this document will be outdated by the time of publication. We ask your understanding and your ASSISTANCE (by noting to us areas of weakness or inaccuracies) APPLICATION This tool can be used during various "internal" strategic collaboration situations, such as: . P.R.O. . Marketing and Sales Training . Staff Development Sessions . Functional & Corporate Orientations BENEFIT The major corporate benefit of this information is to begin developing a high degree of CONSISTENCY AND ACCURACY concerning the corporation's strategic messages and strengths. In short, to ensure that OUR "One Company, One Strategy, and One Message" philosophy is practiced. Additionally, many aspects of "The Big Picture" are frequently asked about by our customers, suppliers, and other manufacturers who are experiencing similar challenges as Digital. Therefore, while this DOCUMENT IS "NOT" DESIGNED TO BE PROVIDED TO ANYONE OUTSIDE OF DIGITAL, the information and concepts contained within must be COMMUNICATED and POSITIONED in the proper manner whenever required, especially during "external" strategic collaborative situations such as: . Plant Tours . Customer Visits . Supplier Conferences . Technology Reviews . Professional Society Meetings SOURCE "The Big Picture" is based on several sources: . States of the Company . Digital Annual Report . Management Memos . The Key Message Program . Internal Guide to Digital Organizations . The PRO Process UPDATES This tool will be updated on a QUARTERLY basis by the Professional Relations Orientation Group and distributed to PRO Graduates and others for dissemination throughout their organizations. -------------------------------------------------------- The slide presentation to support the Big Picture text is also available by contacting Faith Brayden (223-6763) from the Photo Library at PKO3-2/T10 and referencing the below order number. Hardcopies are also available. Slide Presentation Order #2282 We also have videotaped copies of the "Big Picture" presentation made at the March PRO which are available for loan. Forgive my skepticism. I suppose I could blame it on our changing, er, transitioning times. But I have a question: I'm wondering whose "Big Picture" of Digital this is. Is it the Executive Committee's? Is it the author of .0's? Is it the Big Picture as seen from the spotless windows high atop an ivory tower? Having read it, it seems to have a sort of Corporate "flavor" (or, "flavour" - no offense, fellow Corporate English-noters), with just a slight Manufacturing aftertaste. So, whose visions, goals, objectives, strategies, architectures, messages, values, paradigms (shifted and otherwise), beliefs, challenges and business models are these, anyway? I mean, it'd be a little bit embarrassing to charge off integrating and synergizing my relationships with empowered yet responsible entrepreneurship, only to fall down a stovepipe and be set upon by the old-boy network. So to speak.

Why, the "Professional Relations Organization" produces slides, videotapes, and reams of documents about corporate direction, visions, and processes, silly. Steve H

It is my understanding that "PRO" is in line for the November TFSO, that one of the latest suggestions was to do away with "OVERHEAD". |
