I forgot to mention in the previous reply that there are a few other
`benefits' extended to those laid off. They are still considered
Digital employees for the 9 week period. This allows them continued
use of the company car. At the end, they are given the opportunity to
purchase their car. They also can continue to be covered by medical,
life, and disability insurance for the period of time equivalent to
the number of weeks for which they are being paid, up to 52 weeks.
They also provide the assistance of a consulting firm to help the
employees prepare their resums and connect with other companies that
might be hiring. It is not a head-hunting company, but it does keep
its feelers out. Digital is also working with our marketing partners
to find any jobs that they may have. And finally, Digital is providing
the services of the Employee Assistance Program to help those that feel
they need the counselling services.
All in all, though it is not pleasant for anyone to be laid off, I
think Digital has done more than most companies would have done to try
to ease the pain during the job search by taking care of some of the
things that people often ignore during the job search period.

FWIW HP is also laying off alot of people here in CS.
Their package is a little more generous to say the least....
there's going to be alot of competition for jobs here.

Please post data to support the contention that HP's package is "a
little more generous, to say the least." What are they offering?

1528.7 | HP is NOT laying off!! | COOKIE::LENNARD | Rush Limbaugh, I Luv Ya Guy | Mon Jul 29 1991 15:02 | 11 |
| Whoa There!!!! HP is not now, and never has "laid off" anyone! They
are offering incentives to leave the company on a voluntary basis.
For people over 55 with 15 years service, they are offering a year's
pay, plus standard retirement. I don't know what packages are being
put together for others.
Let's get this straight.....both HP and IBM has yet to lay ANYONE off.
I'd take the early retirement package they are offering without even
calling home or cleaning out my desk.

That's funny. Someone I know says IBM laid him off with something like two
weeks' severance pay. From what I gather, this was 10-15 years ago.

That sounds like IBM fired him/her. Lots of people have been fired
from IBM, but none ever laid-off. Go figure.

HP has "excessing."
IBM has "Management Initiated Attrition (MIA)."
If these aren't defined as layoffs, they closely resemble it.

1528.16 | Laid-off or Fired?? | ELWOOD::CHRISTIE | | Fri Sep 27 1991 16:59 | 10 |
| As to lay-off vs fired. I heard a good definition on the news this
week. Seems lay-off orginally meant that the person laid-off would
be rehired if/when the situation improved and jobs opened up again.
Like what the car companies used to do. The reporter then said
that now-a-days, companies used the word lay-off when the employee
is really fired, because there is no chance of that employee being
asked back.

| Any pointers to info about what happens to one's Fleet Car when one is
"turned into a pumpkin?" Can you keep it for awhile? Can you make DEC
an offer to buy it, and if so at what price?
If you manage to find a slot elsewhere in the Corporation that doesn't
include fleet cars in its perqs, can you still make DEC an offer to buy
the car?

We were told yesterday:
- the package is the same as the previous package
- you get to keep the car for 1 week, then Digital provides you with
a rental car for 4 weeks. Not sure if you can purchase the Fleet
car.
- U.S. field impact will be larger in numbers than the July 8 numbers.
- Transition will take place week of Oct. 7.

| re .17
In the last package you could keep the car for thirty days. You can
also purchase the car from the leasing company. They give you the price
and all those details will be provided, if necessary. I purchased a
company car and got a great price on it, matter of fact I'm sure I
could sell it today for more than I paid for it. Hope this helps.
