| And for general interest, Radio Shlock (oops, that's "Shack"... 8^) used
to sell a unit for $100 or so (in the US) that would phone up to three
phone numbers with a prerecorded message if the computer room
temperature rose too high. It supposedly had an external input of some
sort as well, so you could have something else trigger it (like a
water sensor, or perhaps a computer providing a simple sensor-like
action).
So, even a PC could call home for $100 and a little wiring work.
(Don't know if RS still sells the unit; I wish I had money for such
toys 8^).

| Re .0: Yes, we have/had a MicroVAX-based product that did the same thing. We
had one at our customer's site for a pilot. I understand that the product as
it existed is being integrated into some other Customer Services offering.
My customer, Xerox, also has copiers that call a central VAXcluster with usage
and maintenance info.
Regards,
Jim

You're probably referring to the ill-fated Site Service Processor
(SSP) that went by the wayside...good idea, don't know why it
didn't fly..

| Re: DECalert, sophisticated software
DECalert is no inexpensive phone dialer software- it is designed for
monitoring multiple systems, decnet nodes, etc. It is a modified
version of some internally written packages (DIANA, LANmaster) now being
sold to customers.
Not a merely a few $K in price either.

1517.9 | Just for a laugh... | PIPPER::LEBLANCR | Ruth E. LeBlanc, Pipper::LeBlancR | Wed Jul 10 1991 13:32 | 15 |
| Just for a laugh:
A friend of a friend (system support person) was standing next to a
DECtalk terminal, and was alerted to someone/something saying, "Nine!",
"Nine!". He turned around in surprise and found the terminal talking
to him. I guess it comes up with error messages in numbers, and its
particular error was 9.
The funny part came when he got home. The terminal had called and left
several dozen messages on the phone answering machine: "Nine!" buzz
"Nine!" buzz...
:-) I thought it was funny, anyway.

| If it says "nine," it's because something sent a '9' or "nine" or somesuch
to its input port (or there's noise on the port, or it's busted in some
bizarre fashion). There are no "error messages."
Martin. (I wrote significant chunks of DECtalk.)
