1497.0. "Boston Museum of Fine Arts" by MURPHY::FARRAND (I need an unlisted number.) Thu Jun 13 1991 17:23

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to visit the Boston Museum of Fine
Arts, using my Digital badge for admission. No problem at all; just
showed it at the entrance and got waved through without incident.

The museum is first rate; quality exhibits, lunch in the courtyard,
etc. The only problem was the price of parking in the museum parking
lot. They charge downtown rates ($10.50 for approx 4 hours). If you
know the Fenway area at all, I would suggest you look for a parking
spot on the street around the Fens.

Why was I there on a Wednesday instead of at DEC? My optional
    personal holiday.

You can park all day in Denver for $1.50 {:^).

Seriously, that's what you get for going to Boston. The lack of
parking, and outrageous prices are the main reasons I went to Boston
three times in the eight years I was out there.

Mr. Lennard, do you ever have anything good to say about anything?

The MFA is open at least one evening a week. I've had no problem getting
free parking on the street.

The Museum is free and open to the public all saturdays of the year
from 10:00 to 12:00. Parking is also free around the Fenway or
adjacent streets, so it is a wonderful way of spending any saturday
morning... even spending parking money is quite worth it! (when we die
we won't be able to take any money with us... so why keep it? enjoy it,
instead!) it is a great place to visit and I wouldn't miss it for for
    the world.

Note that parking around the Fenway or adjacent streets is still limited to
two hours Monday through Saturday 8 AM to 6 PM, and this is enforced.

The Museum is free to DEC employees with a badge (plus one guest per badge)
at any time. No need to stand in line at the ticket window; just show your
badge to the ticket collectors.

Free admission includes special exhibits which are part of normal museum
admission, but not special exhibits with an extra admission charge.

One can also use the MBTA Subway to get there.

Museum of Fine Arts is right on the Green Line. Take the "E" train to
    MFA stop.

Don't park on Boston streets. They ticket anyone with 15 or
so minutes on the meters. So how many are going to go to
court over $15? So parking on the Boston streets are apt
to cost you $15 vs. $7 for private parking. (They have
ticketing and $ quotas; parking tickets bring $50 million
a year into Boston, and they intend to see this figure rise.)
Anybody out there still in love with government as the
universal solution to mankind's problems? Boston has a
permanent one-party government, so they don't even vote in
some new, inexperienced crooks once in a while.

re .7:

A slight exaggeration. Undoubtedly, some cars get ticketed despite time
left on the meter, but it's definitely the exception. Besides, if you
go in the evening, you don't have to feed the meter anyway.

>Undoubtedly, some cars get ticketed despite time

It may be an exception but I, for one, am apt to agree that it does take
place. To be honest, I believe it happened to me my last trip up that way.

I received a statement in the mail informing me of a supposed parking
infraction approximately 2-months after it was said to have occurred. There
was no ticket on the car -- nothing to indicate that any law had been broken.
I had no way of either confirming or denying that I'd broken any laws. How
do you fight something like this?

I had the not-so-pleasant opportunity to speak with "Operator #3", "Trisha",
and "Bill" (all of whom would not give me their last name if they would give
me their name at all) and insisted that someone at least send me a copy of
this ticket so I could try and confirm it was my vehicle. Well, it was.
But I still feel hard-pressed to admit I did anything wrong.

My 2 worth...

    Scuzzi?

What does this note really have to do with Digital? Isnt there
    a MASS::PARKING_RIPOFFS or MASS::FREEBIES_AT_HQ notesfile  or something
    you could take it to?

I'd visit this museum but the Airfare across the world and parking
costs for a 747 may make it a little expensive. Sounds real nice
though, did we donate a 9000 cluster to them to catalogue their
pictures or something in return for this free entry?

    Regards,
    John

I agree. Let's create a DIGITAL_US notesfile where people can discuss
parking at the Boston Museum, Health Plans, Car plans etc etc etc and
then that'll leave this notesfile for the important issues which affect
us ALL. It might improve response times for this notesfile a bit too.
There's a DIGITAL_UK notesfile already and it's successful. Or would
you prefer me to talk about PIMS and Thames Valley Park here ???

I agree that this note doesn't belong here, but I think general discussions
of benefits do, even if they apply to only one country. Knowing what
benefits are offered in other countries is useful.

Baloney.

The discussion of the MFA does belong here, since it's part of "Working at
Digital." If it only appeared in some local conference, then employees
visiting Boston for business or vacation wouldn't know about it.

Likewise, I would like to know what London museums I can get into for free
or at a discount, and I don't want to have to sift through Digital UK to
find out.

Parking, as it relates specifically to the Museum, seems appropriate. But
moans about Boston parking fines elsewhere in the city should be posted
somewhere else.

BTW, we give the Museum cash donations each year worth quite a bit more than a
9000.

By that logic, many topics which currently exist in "local"
conferences should be discussed here in order to avoid having to wade
through the conference for the location in question. This conference
could triple in size rather quickly.

re .10, .11, & .12. Wow!!!! Has the world had a bad day? I wanted
to share with the Digital community one additional benefit of having a
Digital badge. Thanks .13 for your comment.

Please let this be the end of discussion. From other conferences I
notice topics seem to rathole by reply 20.

A question to our non-New England folk. Do you know of any other
places where you can get in on your Digital badge? (other than a DEC
    facility).

You can no longer get into the Museum of Fine Art on your DEC badge. I
tried it today and the lady at the desk said 'that has ended'

Was an announcement made about this, or is it just another small bit of
    the old DEC slipping away?

1497.17NOTIME::SACKSGerald Sacks ZKO2-3/N30 DTN:381-2085Wed Dec 29 1993 08:453
I discovered this a while ago and reported it somewhere in this notesfile.
I then contacted the appropriate people here at DEC. An announcement
appeared in Livewire shortly afterwards.

I think that anyone can get into the MFA on Saturdays BEFORE 10 AM
