| Now we'll REALLY have to be careful what we write if we want people
to read it...
Perhaps somebody should develop a pre-processor that will search
outbound messages for keywords that might cause rejection at the
other end, if you see what I mean...

Well if you could filter incoming mail
/filter=mail_headers,keep=(first,last)
/filter=size,page_limit=1,char_limit=default
/filter=legal_bs(NOLogos,NoTM,NoBalonie)
/filter=gadfly,exclude_list=FLAMER::J_DOE,...
/filter=receive,(pointer) (sends only a pointer to a W:R file
on sender disk, i.e., don't lose
your diskquota to alot of mail!)
I think that would help matters.

I was asking the MAIL and NOTES developers for a REJECT capability years ago.
Wish the US Postal Service would screen out trash mail on request also (i'd
even pay 'em a reasonable amount to do so). There's a vast hidden market for
this type of functionality, and it will only grow
Somebody with a big stick really should be whacking those nitwits that extract
VTX articles and MAIL them to @world.dis. What a waste of people time, disk
space, and bandwidth! If we're going to use ugly VTX, at least let's not
negate the benefits/savings of doing so by duplicating everything many times
over in MAIL. Grrrr...

re: .0
Excuse me, but,
"... when he printed ..."
is PAPER mail.
I have no problem reading through my ALL-IN-1 mail or VAXmail, discarding
what I don't need -- and printing just what I need.
The image of a company's founder and president personally typing away on
his PC answering his own mail is really quaint, but is not the real world.
That is what executive secretaries and assistants do.
Besides, I'll BET that 8 meters of that 9 meters was cover forwarding
pages and distribution lists.
Oh yes -- back to that other note of mine about where I use ALL-IN-1
mail and VMS mail -- in ALL-IN-1 mail I don't have to read the 200+
person distribution lists before I get to the memo!
Best regards,
Petes

Let me stand up and praise those "nitwits" who extract VTX articles: they
do us a great service by serving as EDITORS -- now I don't have to wade
through reams of vtx (not to mention vtx windows) in order to learn
what's important.
re: Ken on electronic mail.
About 3-4 years ago, the people pushing for a strong no-smoking policy
were making no headway with management. One day, the person responsible
for any policy re-write gave permission for his E-mail address to be
posted in the NO_SMOKING notesfile.
The next morning, his secretary printed out 150 mail messages.
For better or worse, Ken -- as the personification of this company
-- is a magnet for mail, not all of which is worthy of his attention.
I would be very suprised if he were to read his mail.
On the other hand, it was said that President Kennedy had a standing
order to the White House telephone operators to relay every 1,000th call
(or some similar number) to his desk, so he could get some small sample
of unfiltered concerns. Maybe I should write *that* one up for Delta!

We have it now (internally); take a look at DELIVER in the software

LESLIE::DELIVER, which indeed says that it is available to customers. See

| At the opening address to week 1 of Network University, KO told the 500 or so
field people that if we weren't getting what we needed from Engineering and
the rest of the corporation we should send the appropriate parties a memo and
make sure we copy him. KO said the parties needing his influence wouldn't know
if he read the message or not... So, he is encouraging the use of his network
mail address.

| Doesn't each mail message print after a form-feed? (That is to
say, each message starts at the top of a fresh page.) I wouldn't
know because I don't randomly print my mail...
If the above is true, then that would mean 9 meters (less than
30 feet) would be about 30 or so pages. 30 pages would mean
a MAXIMUM of 30 mail messages. (It could be less if some
messages are more than 1 page long.) So he got 30 mail messages
one morning. Big deal. I get at least that much every day.
Maybe that means I'm more important than KO!
Joe Oppelt
BTW, maybe someone needs to teach Ken how to read his mail on
his screen instead of printing it out first. It would be a great
example of how to save money (paper and printing costs). We
could teach him how to use the delete feature in MAIL. We
could show him how to do a DIRECTORY and pre-screen the subject
lines and then do D 3,5,14,29,30 etc to delete those he knows
up front are of no interest to him.
Nine meters. Big deal.

This full-featured mail filter is available in versions that
work with VMS Mail and VAX and RISC Ultrix. We also have a
version that runs under ALL-IN-1, but it requires more
hand-holding in terms of system management.
We would love to see somebody make this into a product, but
we ourselves are an advanced development group.

1384.15 | ALL-IN-1 Mail Filter - in 1988 | SIOG::T_REDMOND | Thoughts of an Idle Mind | Fri May 24 1991 07:47 | 18 |
| Sorry to join this discussion so late. This is a conference I read on
an irregular basis.
We actually developed an ALL-IN-1 Mail Filter in VBO in 1988. It was
shown to the public at DECworld 1988 and we used it as the basis of a
patent application for mail filtering technology which has now been
granted to Digital in Europe and the UK (two separate applications).
It's also (crawling through) the US patent process. As ALL-IN-1 was
introduced in 1981 (DECAID, then CP/OSS, then ALL-IN-1) it only took us
7 years to discover that mail volume was getting out of control.
The ALL-IN-1 Mail Filter is available from ASSETS (at least in Europe).
The Office Filter mentioned in .13 is a development of the original
concept. I think both will handle the "FYI in title is junked" type of
processing that has been requested.
Have fun, Tony
(co-patent holder)
