| What were the prior acquisitions? Were they so much smaller? When a
company with 125,000 employees buys one with 100, I consider it a "tiny"
acquisition.

Is this a way to gain market-share?

Actually, I believe our acquisition of Trilogy (can you say Cupertino)
was much larger. However, I find it interesting that we're acquiring
a software manufacturer who appears to be in the Unix TP marketplace
in Europe.

European side, it doesn't surprise me at all. What I hear is that Europe has told
KO, JS, et. al. that's it's UNIX or nothing over there, period! If the US won't
support that, tough, they'll play their own game!

| Please, don't read too much into this.
This business about trading floors is highly specialized and
concentrated among a few companies in both the United States and
Europe.
A "really big" year for any company in this business is closing 5
sales, but since each sale involves 50 to 500 workstations, it not
peanuts. There's a conference SICVAX::FINANCIAL_INDUSTRY where we talk
about these applications.

| This is not unprecedented. For example, our significant investment in
Scientific Calculations for PCB design systems, or our purchase more
recently of EDA Systems (now we have PowerFrame, probably the most
leading-edge product available from Digital today).
The few people who work for Data Logic are going to provide massive
leverage into the Trading Systems marketplace.
I hope we learn from this and do similar things in Concurrent
Engineering.

| The most important point about this is that we bought the company as
opposed to just investing. Finally, a smarter move. It avoids fiascos
like HP now owning a part of ASK, which owns a part of Ingres.
Which BTW, we had a prior interest in also!
I called Ingres in Denver the other day, and they now answer their
phones "ASK-Ingres".

1252.8 | DEC....'Market driven' | CSSE::BCLARK | | Fri Nov 02 1990 16:21 | 8 |
| Another aspect of the acquisition is the seriousness now being shown by
Digital regarding UNIX. We've stopped talking about it, now we are
taking action.......won't be too long before a customer can run VMS and
UNIX (excuse me..ULTRIX)on the same Platform. As an editorial aside,
Digital can not always expect to 'drive the market'; it is also market
driven.

If by "platform" you mean "hardware", then VMS and ULTRIX already run on the
same platform. There are VAX implementations of each. If you mean "run VMS
and UNIX simultaneously on the same processor", then you have made an all-too-
common misinterpretation of the VMS/POSIX announcement.
