| I went to one a couple years ago. The formal meeting was
orchestrated (not a bad thing, just a fact) and pretty
boring. The formal meeting was followed by a Q&A which was of
marginal interest. I probably wouldn't bother going to another one.

| I talked to someone who attended the last meeting. Their account was
that there was a lot of "trust us, trust us" from the powerful_ones,
and people were skeptical. He expects to attend the next meeting with
other stockholders, and are going to demand some answers and see what
PLAN B holds for Digital. Whatever PLAN B is......

1239.5 | PLAN B = radical change | LEMAN::DAVEED | What you get is how you do it | Thu Oct 25 1990 17:44 | 18 |
| re .4 whatever PLAN B is
FYI there were two approaches to the DECstations (MIPSCO). Plan A was
basically working through the system. PLAN B was Joe Dinucci's idea -
break the rules, do things outside, just do it (stop asking for
permission, losing time in negotiations, etc). There were several
variations of PLAN B. The DECstation 3100 was PLN2B.
In the stockholder context, I would guess that PLAN B means radical
change. This could be similar to the current political climate of
"throw the bums out". It could be "shamrock" companies. It could also
be what a few of DEC's visionaries are calling DEC' (DEC prime) or
newDEC ... it means that the existing DEC is too tangled to be sorted out,
hence we should start one or more new companies (hopefully properly
organised and managed) and gradually move other employees into whatever
positions they are suited for in the new company(s).

What do you mean by "shamrock companies?"

Shamrock companies are staffed by three types of workers:
small core of full-time executives (high energy/early burnout)
subcontractors (esp. self-employed professionals)
temporary and part-time (mostly repetitive, boring tasks)
Good description in "The Age of Unreason" (Charles Handy)
