Worldwide News LIVE WIRE
The following story is based on a series of inter-office memos sent through
the network describing the Chihuahua disaster.
Digital employees victims of Chihuahua, Mexico, flooding
Digital manufacturing employees in Chihuahua, Mexico, are picking up the
pieces of their lives as the result of flooding. According to company
officials, of the 287 employees at the Chihuahua facility, three lost their
homes and six lost almost everything. No employees were killed or
seriously injured.
Nearly 70 percent of the facility's direct labor/clerks/warehousers live
in the areas affected by the flooding. Digital manufactures power supplies
for low-end and mid-range systems at this site.
Chihuahua, a city in northwestern Mexico, has suffered from heavy rains for
the last couple of months. The rains began to take their toll on Sept. 22
when several earthen dams broke, isolating the city.
On the following day, Digital plant management began using radio
announcements to encourage employees who needed help to call the plant.
Within a day, a temporary shelter complete with hot food was set up; and
clothes, food and water were being distributed to needy employees.
Those employees not affected were asked to bring food stuffs, clothes and
medicine to work on Monday.
Efforts are on-going at various Digital sites throughout the Southwest in
the U.S. and the Greater Maynard Area to send donations of much needed
supplies.
More information on the status of employees and the impact of the
devastation will be communicated as the story unfolds.
