While not stated, I would perceive it is THIS conference, for he
accepted the idea of posting his speach, which was done prior to the
DVN in fact in this conference. It appears, however, he had the speach
posted FOR him, and I would suspect that someone (secretary?) is
"extracting" NEW notes each day from this conference for his review.
There would be MORE people speaking up, Jack, if YOU got in and posted
your own replies, saying, "HERE I AM and I WANT EVERYONE TO SPEAK THEIR
MIND, all 20-40,000+ "readers only" TELL ME WHAT ARE THE UNDERLYING
ISSUES AND PROBLEMS! I "guarantee" no tolerance of any manager
exacting retaliation for you expressing your thoughts AND IDEAS in this
conference (but no personal attacks, please. No "Joe Schmoe is an
idiot and should be fired." Talk to me in detail on what's wrong with
the system that is impeding change and employee authority to create
ideas and drive them into reality that will cut waste and needless
expense, and to build more customers, revenue and margin, growing our
company. Give me your intelligent thinking, understanding, ideas and
solutions. ALL of you on the network, accessing this conference."
Someone reading this note working in the Mill: why not "pop" into
Jack's office and "offer" to Jack a hands on VAXnotes instruction for
writing topics and replies, and simply editing. There are only a dozen
basic "necessary" key functions to remember and once learned,
participating in VAXnotes IS as easy as creating and sending an E-mail
memo. Do the right thing ethically and make the offer.
If you already know how to do all this, Jack, you need to get in and
give all the "readers only" the COURAGE to start expressing their
opinions, overriding the fear that DOES keep people from putting their
thoughts AND IDEAS into print, be it paper or electronic. With
thousands (20-40,000+ ?)reading this conference, consider why only
about 1,500 have ever written ANY reply in the entire last three years!

1216.3 | How do you get anonymous? | CGOA01::HARROP | Ring those phones!!! | Thu Oct 04 1990 18:09 | 12 |
| The only way I know of to send anonymous notes to anyone is via
internal/external paper mail.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't my node and user name get put at
the top of every entry into notes? Does not this same information go
out with every VMSmail message, and something similiar with ALL-IN-1
messages?
As far as I know the only thing that does not force author identification
is a piece of paper, but then I'm not a technical genius at such things.

Technically, yes. But many notes conference moderators
perform the service of posting notes anonymously on behalf of
others. The usual way this is done is to send mail with the
note text to the moderator, asking for an anonymous posting.
The moderator then extracts the message, without the mail
header which would identify the sender, and then inserts it
into the notes conference. The message then literally
appears as if the moderator had written it (as far as the
Notes "author" is concerned), but the moderator will put some
text at the top explaining that the posting is being done on
behalf of another.
Is the relationship between moderator and anonymous poster
legally protected? :-}

| RE: .2
I would rather have Jack Smith spend his time on real work towards solving
this company's problems than on symbolic PR gestures such as being seen
personally posting notes in NOTES conferences. If he keeps tabs on what goes
on in this conference, I don't care how he goes about it--reading them
interactively, reading batch extracts, having his secretary extract them for
him--that's his business.

| Re: .4
You have the method right - do a SHOW MODERATORS, pick one and send
him or her the text of your message along with a title. Assuming that
the note doesn't violate policy, the moderator will post it for you.
When I perform this service, I don't inform anyone else of the
author's identity, and I also will forward mail to the author if
requested. But I do want to point out that there is no "shield law"
for moderators, and if someone in my management chain insists that
I reveal the author's name, I cannot reasonably refuse to do so.
However, this has never happened in the four years I've been doing
it.

For what it's worth, the head of Digital UK posted a note in the UK Digital
conference. That was back in Jun 89 and the subject was reducing expenses!
See marvin::uk_digital, note 309.52
The UK subsidiary is, according to the 1989 annual review:
'the most successful subsidiary of Digital Equipment Corporation'
Perhaps we have methods of working and an organisational structure
which less profitable parts of the Corp. could take note of at the
moment?

| No, no, no, no... !!!
I think the Notes file Jack was referring to was the DELTA_IDEAS
Conference, not DIGITAL. Remember, he kept referring to the DELTA Program
throughout the broadcast and there are anonymous entries there. I know; I
have submitted one.

Makes sense.. as far as I can remember, the whole thing about the DELTA

1216.11 | pointer to conference I think Jack was talking about | CVG::THOMPSON | Aut vincere aut mori | Mon Oct 08 1990 10:38 | 11 |
| While I'd like to think that Jack Smith followed this conference
I too assumed that he was talking about CAPNET::DELTA_IDEAS. He
seemed to be up to date on what was happening in the Delta program.
The Delta_Ideas conference features base notes that include, by
permission, suggestions submitted to the Delta program. The topics
are open to replies and discussion. It does at times get lively BTW.
Alfred
PS: KP7 to add and I have added the keyword DELTA to this reply.
