If the Equipment is on Maint Contract, or Installed by Customer
Services, then they should have the details in things like
Site Management Guides.
Failing that, whichever Plant Shipped the Stuff would have it
on the Shipping Details if you can track the DEC order Number used.
If it is things like Module Boards, then Digital generally does
not use Serial numbers, much to the disgust of the Military
Customers.

1123.2 | System "T" should have your answers | BTOVT::GREENE_K | Kevin Greene, DTN:266-4743 | Wed Jun 13 1990 13:55 | 22 |
| Brings back memories of my days in shipping!
The majority if not all shipments processed via the POM process (point
of manufacture) are entered into a common order processing system,
System T.
When a shipment goes out the door, System T is updated at the DEC
number level with serial numbers for all systems and options. Again,
this applies for systems and options, accessories or supplies ordered
through Dec-Direct may have a different order processing system.
What I recommend is for you to ask your local shipping personnel if
they use System T. If they do, they should be able to help you perform
inquiries into it by DEC number.
As an aside, your node name looks like a node in Westminster. POM
Consolidation, last I knew resided in Westminster.

Kevin

| More specifically, the "central library" you asked for is only
a short walk away! Data Warehouse would give you what you need.
For specific names of folks VERY close to this information (they
helped design it) - and right there in Westminster - give
me a call.

1123.5 | Corporate Order Base | ARCHER::LAWRENCE | | Thu Jun 14 1990 10:14 | 13 |
| Would it not also be possible to do a lookup on the corporate order base?
It is possible to track orders using a customer code. This would give
you a list of all orders that customer has placed. Pulling a copy of
those orders might give you the information you seek.
You area business manager might be able to help with this. Charlie Arlington
is listed as the NE area business manager. He's at 264-8113 (@MKO). If he
has gone on to other things, he might be able to give you the name of his
replacement.
If you run into stone walls, call me and I'll see if I can do more research.

| -1 Pulling a copy of the order won't help to find serial
numbers. I'm in CAS and have a heck of a time getting hold
of serial numbers.

1123.7 | I got some info, but... | WILARD::COUTU | Don | Mon Jun 25 1990 09:45 | 13 |
| I have pursued similar info. There are files for hardware under
contract, software under contract and records of shipments. These
are three seperate groups none of which have sufficient personnel
to do custom data extracts, etc. The amount of data currently on
line versus archived is limited. Therefore, you need to know how
far back you need to cover and the shipped data appears to have
every line item, sub components, documents, etc. so you can get
a high volume of data.
The other problem is if they can't or won't make the time to tell
us whats in the files, you don't know what you can ask for. If you
find a sucessful solution, please let me know as this is not my #1 priority.

1123.8 | | OTOO01::POND | | Wed Jun 27 1990 15:55 | 8 |
| If System T is missing the serial number data, the next best bet is
to contact the manufacturing plant. Each plant has their own
systems, methods, and processes for tracking this sort of stuff...
from nothing to full blown traceability.
If you send me the system type via Email I can tell you exactly
who to contact.

While we may not "use" serial numbers, almost every board manufactured
since 1981 (and likely earlier - I haven't any older boards to hand) have
a bar code label with an individual serial number.

1123.10 | no serial numbers | CSC32::K_BOUCHARD | Ken Bouchard CXO3-2 | Wed Mar 20 1991 14:21 | 4 |

Just look at any "flip chip" and earlier module.

its under contract if it is within my area (NY NJ).

1123.13 | Try CIC....... | MSDOA::SCRIVEN | | Thu Dec 28 1995 08:07 | 12 |
| If you're looking to validate ship dates, warranty info., etc., use CIC
and it tracks by serial # providing the associated Order DEC#. This
works most times for orders that were shipped to end users; however, if
it was shipped to a business partner (Distributor, VAR) it looses MOST
of it's integrity. I'm sure there is an Admin CCS (Com Center
Specialist) or CSA (Customer Support Administrator) for your geography
that would be more than willing to help.
Send me E-mail off line if you think I can help any further.
