1060.0. "NAT'L AIDS CONF/ERLINE BELTON" by BARTLE::WELLSD (Name too personal to share) Fri Mar 23 1990 16:27
This message is from Paul Ross, Manager
AIDS Program Office, Corporate Employee Relations
National Business Leaders to Hear President Bush Address on AIDS
in Washington, March 29 1990
Digital has been one of the forces in bringing about an important AIDS
leadership forum in Washington next week, and the following is advance
information about this important event.
President George Bush is scheduled to give a special keynote address on
AIDS at the National Business Leadership Conference on AIDS in Washington
on Thursday, March 29th. This is significant because this is the first time
in the history of the epidemic that a President has spoken publicly about
the issue of AIDS. There is, understandably, great media interest in this
event.
The conference, sponsored by the National Leadership Coalition on AIDS,
will attract 500 senior executives from business, labor, and government who
will be working on pertinent issues of the AIDS epidemic. Digital is an
active member of the Coalition. Erline Belton, Corporate Employee Relations
Manager is on the Board of Directors, and I sit on two national task
forces. Both of us have been active in planning the meeting, and Erline
will be part of the program itself. She will be talking about employee
relations perspectives and corporate civic leadership responsibility.
The major issues to be discussed include:
o An Update on the Corporate Response to AIDS
o A Critical Look at AIDS in the 90's
--Research and treatment issues
--The numbers--and what they mean
o AIDS from the the perspective of CEO's
o Health Care Costs
o Leadership challenges for businesses
In addition to President Bush, and Erline some of the speakers will include
o Anthony Fauci, M.D., Director of the National Institute of
Allergy and Infectious Disease, NIH, Washington
o James Curran, M.D., M.P.H., Centers for Infectious Disease,
Centers for Disease Control, Atlanta
o J. Richard Munro, Chairman and CEO, Time Warner, Inc.
o Robert D. Haas, Chairman and CEO, Levi Strauss & Company
o Carl J. Schramm, President, Health Insurance Association of America
o Lawrence Williford, Senior Vice President, Allstate Insurance Company
The epidemic does not show any sign of abating. There are now over 121,000
cases of full blown AIDS, and since 1981, 72,000 persons have died. It is
estimated that there are 1.5 million asymptomatic carriers, people who have
been infected but who are not yet showing signs of illness. There are more
cases of AIDS in 8 years than there were cases of polio in 40 years.
The topics that are discussed at this forum will impact policy decisions
around the epidemic that is touching our lives, the lives of our
coworkers, their families, and our customers. I will keep you informed on
significant progress.
Best regards,
