| It was in the papers, but sitting here in my office I have heard
nothing. As I read, these cuts were to come in Manufacturing -
but first there were to be offers of retraining/skilling. We have
heard nothing as of this date but will kepp you posted.
The ship is still here ...

1052.4 | close enough for gov't work | DEC25::BRUNO | I avoid clichs like the plague! | Mon Mar 19 1990 09:26 | 8 |
| The plant manager and site services manager spent several minutes
explaining how inaccurate the Gazette-Telegraph story would be.
Saturday's issue came out and it was a bit inaccurate. They put up a
big eye-catcher something like "345 DEC employees to change jobs or
Leave!". Partially true, but sensationalized. Digital feeds them
information, and they spiff it up to sell their paper.

1052.6 | RUMOR CENTRAL COULD BE!!!!!!! | GRANPA::JFARLEY | | Wed Mar 21 1990 21:30 | 6 |
| Rumors heard in New Jersey that a lot of disk engineering personnel
in Colorado,Arizona and New Hampshire were offered the severance pay
option. I am not privy to any inside information only a casual
observer to specific topics when they come across my desk. I hope
what I heard are indeed rumors but if they are true then-
"WHAT IN THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH COMPANY"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Read note 1048. This notesfile seems to be the only place where
facts can be found, entered by people with first hand knowledge.
Too bad that info cannot be disseminated accurately from up top
and all hands aren't aware of what is happening in the company.

Actually, the info IS getting disseminated from the top. I work
at the CSC in Colorado Springs. We have received about a dozen
memos so far. They are coming from quite high up out here. The
first one we got stated that since we (CSC) are revenue generating
and have the work, we don't personally have to worry about or expect
buyout offers. It could have stopped there. If it doesn't concern
us, why should we have to be bothered with details?
But people asked about it anyway (at group meetings). And starting
the next day and ever since, we HAVE been getting updates as news
happens. All in all, only a few dozen people in Colorado Springs
(in a different group) have been offered the buyout. That's it.
We were given the details of the plan. We were given the groups
that were affected. We were told when the affected groups were
going to be told.
Most of what we get is really non-news. Anticlimactic compared
to the paranoia and rumors propogated here. Maybe the reason
that there is no news being disseminated is that there is not
any news yet. Facts ARE hard to find sometimes -- if they do not
exist.

1052.9 | OK, here's the story from CXO as I see it. | SSDEVO::EKHOLM | Greg - party today, tomorrow we die! (Cluster Adjuster) | Thu Mar 22 1990 22:44 | 47 |
| Working in Engineering here in Colorado Springs as a Customer Service
Engineer (Field Service) the areas being hit are.
Disk Mfging - we need to reduce the transfer cost of all of our
own manufactured disk drives.
Disk Engineering - Some projects coming to a close will no longer
need as many personal. New projects may not be
be funded and these engineers/techs are the ones
that may be asked to find work elsewhere.
Customer Service/Field Service - making money, are below head count
and as long as contracted equipment is not leaving, the
income/engineer balance looks good.
Training - The Colorado Springs training department is moving into
a new building the last weekend in March. More and more
courses are being offered here in CXO. Most are of a
software nature rather than hardware.
Data Base group - from all I can find out, this group is still
hiring providing you have at least a Masters degree. You
will not even get an interview without one.
Tech Docs - ways that manuals, pocket service guides, etc are
funded are being changed. Cost cutting measures could
effect this group in the future.
Jet Wing / order staging - or what ever they are being called is
closing. This operation is moving to PNO and/or elsewhere.
Forge Road / R & D for media/etc - Tempe, AZ and Forge Road deal in
about the same items with Forge being more of the R & D
facility. Talk has been going of for some time about a
consolidation. So far nothing has been done.
OK, did I miss anyone? MFGing is hardest hit. Engineering being next.
Many people are not affected at all. The goal, reduce the cost of
making our disk drives, and eliminate excess mfging capacity that we
do not need in this soft market. Some concern has been expressed that
we do not make these excess employees uncomfortable by talking about
who they are. This is as general as I can make it. Hope no one takes
exception to this.
Regards
Greg
