This has been probably discussed before in this conference, but I can't seem to guess which note title would contain this discussion... There seems to be a lot of talk going on about 'opportunities in the field'. I've seen things like assignments that last from several weeks to several months, each working on short projects with customers all over the U.S. These assignments are generally project management type positions where DEC manufacturing (or etc.) experience could be put to use by a customer. It would seem to me that this offers an excellent career opportunity, but only if one could string together several of these assignments. Are there enough of these assignments to assure one that another would appear once one has wrapped up? Who pays for this, does your cost center get re-imbursed, or are you constantly moving from one cost center to the next as you change assignments? I could see people wanting to do this for a year or two, working on several different projects, and then wanting to return to a more permanent position (that's how I see it anyway). Anybody have any comments? JP

See note 765.*. If I am guessing corectly then the program you are looking for is called ``All hands on DEC'' program. You cost center pays for you while you are on assignment.
1031.2 | 911 system | GLDOA::GARRETT | Sat Feb 17 1990 18:59 | 9
If you are already in the field, there is something else that gives the same results. That is the 911 system. If a software delivery manager has a service to deliver, but does not have the resources to deliver it, then he will post a 911 on the network. Any manager with available people can respond and possibly deliver the service. The unit delivering the service gets the revinue and covers the cost. I am not a manager but have deliveried some of these services. There may be variations on revinue and cost handling. Curtis

There are other opportunities which are out in the field. I do not know the details, however recently our cost center manager asked us if we were interested in going on short assignments in the U.S. or Europe. These assignments are at customer sites. This may in fact be related to the 911 system described in .2 Bryan
1031.4 | Come to Minneapolis; we're looking for lots of good people | MUSKIE::SCOTTG | Greg Scott, Minneapolis SWS | Fri Mar 09 1990 23:10 | 31 |
Minneapolis is about as "in the field" as it gets. And, last I heard, we have about a zillion full time permanent openings for Sales Support and SWS - er, ah, I mean EIS - Delivery people. And, as a typically overworked and underpaid software grunt, I can tell you we really *do* need more people here. You know the ads, where they talk about dynamic, fast paced, high tech environments? Well, we really have one here. We have 3 major RFP responses going on, a trade show to run next week, several customer demos, and at least one ongoing multi-million dollar EIS Delivery effort. We are losing business here because we can't cover everything we need to cover. One of our senior networking people is now dedicated to supporting a major DECnet phase V Field test site for the next several months. So now, this person can't go on as many sales calls and speak IBM SNA-ese with the MIS directors. Every time an RFP comes in, we have to scramble and work like crazy to put together a credible response. If you like dealing with customers and potential customers, becoming the "expert" on just about every dad-blamed product that exists, and working on a zillion things at the same time, then call or write. If you speak VMS-ese, ULTRIX-ese, any dialect of PC-ese (MS-DOS, OS/2, MAC), workstation-ese, or any dialect of network-ese (DECnet, OSI, TCP/IP, SNA), or if you know how to program in some language, then come to sunny Minneapolis. The weather is *always* nice here, and the people are warm even if the climate isn't. - Greg Scott
