1013.1 | What problem are you trying to solve in *this* conference? | CVG::THOMPSON | My friends call me Alfred | Mon Jan 22 1990 15:05 | 11 |
| I'm not sure, from the content, why you put this note here. If it's
to find a way to get the customer a box than you'll have a lot more
luck asking in ANYWAY::ASKENET or perhaps NODEMO::MARKETING though
the latter is "iffy". Locating boxes is somewhat outside the scope
of HUMAN::DIGITAL in any case.
If the purpose of your reply is to ask the age old question "Why
can't/don't we take better care of our customers?" than this conference
may be a good fit though I'd prabably take it up in NODEMO::MARKETING.

1013.2 | Try PPDS @DAS | JGO::EVANS | | Tue Jan 23 1990 03:19 | 10 |
| re .o
There is a packaging info database @DAS called PPDS.
Contact Ralph Spinelli.
However I think you will need to be able to tell him the DEC NO
of the system as PPDS is organised by DEC NO and not by product
name.

1013.4 | Origional Topic title was "Help!!" | CVG::THOMPSON | My friends call me Alfred | Tue Jan 23 1990 09:49 | 13 |
| RE: .3 Sorry but some spoilsport (me) changed the title of the
topic to make it more discriptive.
RE: .0 Why does it have to be a DEC box? If I were the salesperson
I would have a) gotten size of the box we use. b) found out if that
were enough to make the customer happy (after all he's the one doing
the shipping. c) is supplying a box was what it took to make the
customer happy and there were none around the office I'd go to U-haul
and buy (and expense) a box to bring by the customer site. This would
almost have to be less costly than sending a box from a manufacturing
site.

1013.5 | Shipping companies will custom-make cartons | CADSYS::RICHARDSON | | Tue Jan 23 1990 09:59 | 13 |
| You can always check with companies that pack things for shipment (not
necessarily moving companies); if you are in Eastern Mass., there is
one called "Pkg." in the area of Wellesley or Needham (check phone
book; I haven't needed them for a year or two) that does this kind of
stuff. They will supply or construct a shipping carton and packing
material for anything you might even think of shipping anyplace, even
very fragile or very large items (they also will get the thing shipped
for you, if you want).
Of course, you could also check with the last cutomer who took delivery
of any system that comes in the same size carton; you may snare a real
DEC carton that way, if it is about to end up in some other customers
dumpster anyhow.

1013.6 | Wrap it and Ship it | ULTRA::SEKURSKI | | Tue Jan 23 1990 12:49 | 9 |

Being a veteran of many a DEC move wrapping the beastie in
bubble wrap and strapping it to a pallet is more than enough
when shipping from one place to another.

1013.7 | TRY ALBUQUERQUE OR WESTFIELD MANUFACTURING | WFOV11::KULIG | | Thu Jan 25 1990 13:43 | 26 |
| re: .0
Sandi,
The Westfield plant used to be sourced for the Vaxstation II GPX, this
product was transferred to Albuquerque some time ago. I would suggest
the following.
1.)Call the Albuquerque plant and ask for the plant materials manager.
Ask the plant material manager for the name of the 99-Class planner/
buyer. 99 class is packaging material.
OR
2.)If you know the system part number (ex. -630QW-A2 or -LABVX-CC)
send me mail or give me a call. We may use the same box here in
Westfield on another product. But without a part number of the
box or of the system I am at a loss. "Vaxstation II GPX" covers
alot of ground.

1013.8 | | BUNYIP::QUODLING | I'm Bob Vila... for 'This Old Vax' | Fri Jan 26 1990 14:59 | 7 |
| Get in touch with the Workstations Marketing Group in the mill (I
think), They shipp gear all over the country, and I believe they
have custom cases built to do it. They might loan you one, if they
still carry them for that type of system.

1013.9 | WHY A DEC BOX? | HSOMAI::IRVING | | Mon Jul 01 1991 18:49 | 25 |
| Just in case someone else reads this note for info on acquiring boxes,
please be aware that it has happened on too many occassions that a
customer insists upon acquiring a DEC box, preferably with the
appropriate part number on it because this part is intended for
unauthorized resell on the black market.
Please do waste your time and resources looking for a box, unless you
know without a doubt that a long-term DEC customer MUST have such
a box for a legitimate reason.
I can think of no legitimate reasons in which a generic box with the
appropriate packing requirements would not be sufficient.
I am a customer relations rep in Houston, and I have experienced many
such illegal situations and have had to deal with the consequences of
having a black market part sold to an unknowing customer.
It has costs this company many dollars.....
PLEASE BE AWARE OF SUCH REQUESTS!!!!

Amelia Irving
