961.0. "Looking for info on the Customer Events Group" by CSA4::NESTOR () Mon Oct 30 1989 19:43

I am currently interested in finding out about what it takes to
become involved in the area of trade shows (better known in
Digitalese as Customer Events). How does one go about finding
out what the qualifications are to work in that area? Does any
know of someone that I could contact for more info?

Try Gil Tardif. (sorry, I forget the nodename. Try ELF V1) Be
prepared to wait for an answer as there are alot of shows going
       on right now.

    here's another pointer!

Try contacting Richard Cass in Merrimack NH. He works in corporate
    events.  Node cevent::cass
961.3Call your local District Workstation Team (DWT)MUSKIE::SCOTTGGreg Scott, Minneapolis SWSMon Nov 20 1989 00:2639
Or, work for a local District Workstation Team as part of a Sales
Support group. Since the big workstation announcement Jan 10, 1989,
we've put on 5 customer events that I can think of. These include
the original workstation road show, an event at 3M, a community
Strictly Business show, DECUS, and an event at the University of
Minnesota. Our group has also done smaller stuff at other colleges
around Minnesota and in Duluth and Rochester.

Qualifications?? Be ready to hook up and tear down equipment fast.
Learn how to install just about anything. Learn to pop conference room
doors off of hinges to get the booths in and out of rooms. Learn how
to drive a truck, van, or whatever transportation you need to move
    stuff to the show site.

Learn how to scrounge for equipment, cables, software, support, and
everything else. Don't be afraid of quick trips to the local
lumberyard/hardware store for power strips, extension cords, etc.

Also learn how to be quick on your feet. During the show, hundreds of
people will ask you random questions about just about anything.
They expect *you* to be the expert.

The other neat thing about doing the shows from a local office is,
you have a real stake in making sure things go well. You will know
many of the customers that come to the show, and your reputation
will be on the line for each show.

You will work your rear-end off, and you will feel lots of satisfaction
after it's all over. You will also feel a big sense of let-down after
the adrenallin stops pumping. While getting ready, you will swear
this is absolutely the last one. A couple days after it's over,
you will be bored looking forward to the next one.

Contacts - get involved with a District Workstation Team. We can
use a few good people here in Minneapolis. Give me a call or MAIL
    if interested.

    - Greg Scott (DEC has two people named Greg Scott. I'm the original,
    		   from Minneapolis.)
961.4Still looking for info/contacts on Cust. Events.CIVIC::UNLSTD_PARTSMon Nov 20 1989 17:5818
I want to offer a large note of THANKS to everyone who offered advice
to me regarding my current attempt at beginning a new career in the
area of Customer Events. I have sent my resume off to Bob Carty mgr.
of Customer Events, Richard Cass who works for DIS and Lina
Oliveira, she's a mgr. but I'm not sure which group she is in. Now
that I have contacted all of these people, does anyone else have
any other ideas besides what was offered in note #961? I am very,
very anxious to make a career change into this area and would be
willing to do whatever it would take to move this along even if I
had to be loaned from my current position (ala ALL HANDS ON DEC)
If anyone has any ideas regarding this at all, PLEASE dont
hesistate to call me at anytime, even at home if necessary my home
    phone is (603) 673-7982.
